3 popular diets for summer BUSTED by experts

Bondi Beauty has spoken to two qualified experts to bust 3 popular diets for summer.

We come in many shapes and sizes and it’s our belief that ALL women are fierce beauty queens who shouldn’t change to fit societies mould of ‘beautiful’.

But, with summer just around the corner, you may be feeling like you need to lose a little weight here or there. That’s where unhealthy crash diets and detoxes often overtake our lives for a brief couple of weeks before bikini season.

Bondi Beauty spoke to Alexandra Parker and Anna Debenham, accredited practising dietitians from The Biting Truth about three common diet trends people adopt before going into summer, and why they may not be as effective as we think.

Here’s the breakdown:

1) Gluten Free Diet

The gluten free diet involves avoiding all foods containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley and oats), and has become the diet in Hollywood; but take care as it may not be good for you.

“There are a lot of myths and misconceptions that a gluten-free diet is a good weight loss diet or is a healthier option, however, this is not true,” Parker told Bondi Beauty,

“In fact, in many cases gluten free options are less healthy than their gluten-containing counterpart”.

Ladies and gents, the experts say if you’re not actually intolerant to gluten or have coeliac disease, don’t cut it out of your diet.

2) The Paleo Diet

The Paleo diet is eating food that cave men and women would have consumed (supposedly). Foods you can’t eat include dairy, grains and legumes, as well as ‘seed oils’ and processed foods.

Alcohol is also on the banned list (bummer).
Because this diet is rich in fruit and veggies and you avoid processed foods, it can help with clearing up your skin.

Paleo does have down sides as Parker and Debenham explain:

“This diet is not conducive to a holistic life change as it encourages restrictive eating, which is not sustainable in the long term, the diet has also been associated with increased risk of bowel cancer because of all the red meat”.

3) Juice Cleanses

Juice cleanses have been viewed as a fast way to either lose weight or to detox the liver or both.

Because you will only consume liquid this diet may result in weight loss initially but the ladies at The Biting Truth warn that it won’t be for the long term and you will likely regain the weight.

“We don’t believe that you can “detox” the body by cutting out certain foods,” Parker says, “The best and only way to “detox” is to avoid consuming the things that put more pressure on the liver and kidneys, such as alcohol and drugs”.

So, what’s the moral of the story?

It’s fab to be healthy, but be smart and informed about your diet choices before summer rolls around.

If you are thinking of a lifestyle change, speak to your doctor or an Accredited Practising Dietician about what is right for you.

Also, enjoy the chocolate bar and glass of wine on a Friday night guilt-free, because you’re a goddess who deserves it.
