Shelter is Sydney’s sexiest new place to workout, and it’s in Double Bay.
Shelter is the brain child of Ben Mills, an Australian who lived in New York for five years, and became addicted to Soul Cycle, America’s premier cycling studio chain.
Shelter is going to be big – you heard it first here. The tagline of the venue is ‘feels like a spa, works like a gym’. This is as upmarket as fitness gets, but without feeling uptight. It’s inclusive.
The stunning wellness centre is more like a luxurious, but chilled wellness retreat rather than a fitness centre, with a breezy open-air style design with wood finishings, gum leaves, a fire place and smoothie bar. The breeze literally flows right through the building.
It’s the kind of space where people want to hang out after classes and just chat, chill and drink amazing smoothies.
Mills has brought back the best of what he experienced in fitness centres and gyms in America and opened Shelter in Double Bay this week.
It is so refreshingly different and relaxed, but make no mistake, the classes give you a seriously good work out.
Shelter brings 5 health and wellness concepts together and has a high end spin cycling studio, boxing as well as a huge wellness component including a fresh water ice bath, traditional and infra-red sauna, and juice bar.
The juice bar offers made-to-order fresh juices with a unique Australian menu of smoothies that rehydrate and full the body without the sugar. You order before your class and they are ready as soon as its over.
The classes are intense, music focussed, and tough.
“I wanted to create a uniquely Australian wellness concept that would inspire” Mills says.
“I wanted to connect Australia with the best in wellness.”
There’s acute attention to detail here. The products in the bathrooms are Aesop and Mr Smith from the Melbourne company The Lab Organics. Towels, cycle shoes and lockers are all included.
