Three glasses of champagne a week may help reduce the risk of dementia.

Drinking up to three glasses of Champagne a week could help reduce the risk of developing Dementia and Alzheimer’s, according to researchers from the University of Reading.

Phenolic acids are plant substances said to have antioxidant qualities. The grapes used to make Champagne – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – contain high levels of these compounds which help modulate signals in the part of the brain that is associated with memory and learning.

Compounds in Champagne appear to help restore brain protein counts to normal levels, thereby reducing dementia risk, according to research.

However, before you pop the Bollinger, you need to be aware that the study wasn’t carried out on humans.

Small quantities of the celebratory drink were fed to rats that then performed simple memory tests – a 70% success rate was displayed, compared to 50% in those who didn’t consume the drink. After six weeks of consumption, the proteins that improve short-term memory had increased in concentration.

Researchers at the University of Reading are hoping to construct a similar study in humans, with predictions that similar results will be comparable to studies on other phenolic-rich foods, such as blueberries.

The possibility of Doctor’s prescribing Champagne may be a long way away, but we will await further research with a bottle on ice.
