Foods you didn’t know existed and why you need them in your diet

Super Foods are gold for your body….

Super foods are gold for your body – we’ve found a few that you may not even know existed.

Millet is a small round grain that ranges in colour (white, grey, yellow or red) and has a mild nutty taste. It’s a gluten free grain, and can be boiled and mashed like potatoes, or fluffed like rice. Millet contains 18 different amino acids, a number of vitamins and minerals and has been known to protect the body against heart disease, gallstones and often reduces the risk of asthma in young children. While packed with so much goodness, it’s also low in saturated fats and sugars, making it a low calorie power grain.

Millet can be used as an alternative for oats with breakfast. Throw in some almond milk, chopped baked apple, cinnamon and raw honey for a supercharged start to the day. It can also be tossed into salads and stir-fries or added to soups.

Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is considered one of nature’s most completely nourishing foods because it contains all the nutrients we require. For starters, it’s an energy enhancer due to the amount of carbohydrates, proteins and B vitamins it contains. It’s also a skin soother used to treat skin irritations like eczema. It contains high doses of antioxidants, which will have an anti-inflammatory effect on the tissues of the lungs, preventing asthma.

Bee pollen is the richest protein source derived from any animal. As consumers of bee pollen it is important to understand that it takes a bee 8 hours of work every day for a month to produce one teaspoon of pollen.

You can purchase bee pollen online or from your local health food store.

Algae is an amazing superfood that can be easily incorporated and disguised in your daily diet. Algae not only improves brain function significantly but also acts as an anti-aging agent due to its powerful antioxidants which are able to stimulate cell movement and aid the repair of damaged tissues.

Algae can be bought from your local health food store. For easy storage and useage, freeze the algae in ice cube holders and put one ice cube of algae in your smoothie with almond milk, honey, banana, chia seeds and blueberries.

Golden Berries

Golden berries originally come from South America and are well-known for their fat-burning properties. With a similar taste and texture to dried apricots, these berries promote good hair and skin health as well as improve memory and metabolism function.

Try adding golden berries to a trail mix of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, brazil nuts and almonds.

Cacoa nibs

Cocao nibs are pieces of cocoa bean that have been roasted and hulled. They have a slightly nutty flavour and a hint of bitterness.

Cocao is a rich source in antioxidants, iron, calcium, vitamin A and E and potassium. When eaten daily, they have been proven to create a smoother, more hydrated complexion. They’re perfect to add when baking cookies or having muesli and yoghurt.

If you can combat your chocolate cravings by nibbling on some cacoa nibs, you’ll be one fit and healthy woman.
