From gradual tanners, to mousses, sprays and foams – there are a plenty of self tanners out there. These are our go to picks for summer.

Summer is well and truly on its way, and with that comes the promise of warmer weather, beach days and outfits that get the legs out.

Yet with statistics revealing two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70, it pays to get out of the sun, reducing tanning times and think about skin-safety.

The only solution to getting a healthy, bronzed glow then comes down to self-tanners. This season, a new bunch of tanning products are on the market that promise fuss free, easy application that will leave skin luminous and bronzed, not orange and streaky.

Here’s what Bondi Beauty is adding to our tanning routines this summer.

Gradual Tanners

Gradual tanners, usually in the form of lotions and moisturizers, are great for those who want to maintain a bronzed glow all season long.

They’re without the hassle of tannings mitts, and they don’t require an overnight time period to develop. They also won’t transfer onto sheets or clothes, meaning these gradual tanners can be taken and applied anywhere.

Simply incorporate into your daily moisturizing routine to build up a gorgeous glow over time.

ModelCo Tan Jelly, RRP $25 AUD

The ModelCo Tan Jelly is an ultra-hydrating, gradual tanner that is applied daily to enhance a sun-kissed radiance and glow.

With a minimal scent, designed to soften skin, and a sheer colour that doesn’t transfer onto hands, this is product has to be a staple in any tanning routine.

A natural bronze colour is developed subtly over time, with no orange or streaks seen in sight.

It’s jelly-like, smooth texture means the product is absorbed very easily into the skin, and it’s also packed with a crystalline formula which gives the skin a subtle sparkle.

St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Gradual Tan Watermelon Infusion Body Lotion RRP$25 AUD

Gone are the days of coconut-smelling tanners overwhelming the bathroom with the powerful scent. Instead, the St. Tropez Gradual Tan Watermelon Infusion Body Lotion is a refreshing, fruity product that helps gradually create a natural-looking tan.

A lightweight lotion, this product can be applied every day to continuously build colour, while providing up to 72 hours of hydration, thanks to the inclusion of powerful moisture-boosting ingredient hyaluronic acid.

Absorbing into the skin quickly with a mess-free application, this can be re-applied night and day to nourish the skin while developing a depth of colour that is always sunkissed and glowing.

Palmer’s Natural Bronze Body Lotion, RRP$9.99

Another gradual tanner to maintain that bronzed glow all summer round, you can’t go past this moisturizer from cult-favourite Palmers.

Applied once a day, this Body Lotion helps to build a gradual, even tan that isn’t streaky.

Infused with pure cocoa butter and vitamin E, this moisturizer not only colours, but it also hydrates and soothes the skin.

It leaves skin feeling soft and supple, while the added Vitamin E helps to enhance the protective function of the skin and decrease the appearance of fine lines.

Fake Tans

If one requires an instant tan for an event, gradual tanners don’t often cut it. Fake tans such as mousses, foams and spray tans are perfect for a darker, more vibrant bronzed look.

Ensuring a streak-free, smooth application is the hardest part about fake tanning, where dodgy tan lines or excess product can simply ruin a photo or night out.

ModelCo soap
ModelCo Exfoliating Soap, RRP$10

To start with, ensure the skin is prepped by exfoliating to remove any dead skin cells or previous old tan. The ModelCo Tan Remover Exfoliating Soap (RPP$10 AUD) is the perfect option, effortlessly removing any remnants of old tan.

Formulated with goats’ milk and natural pumice, this helps to create a perfect base for the new tan, leaving skin soft and smooth.

When applying, always use a tanning mitt over bare hands. Nobody likes orange hands – not only does using a mitt help to reduce this and other mess, it ensures a smooth and streak-free finish.

The Byron Bay Bronze Microfibre Tanning Mitt (RRP $12.95 AUD) is our current favourite. With a plush, soft exterior, this doesn’t feel scratchy or irritating on the skin. Apply the tanner directly to the mitt and move in even, circular motions so as to ensure an even distribution.

ModelCo Tan Airbrush In A Can, RRP $25 AUD

This is one of the world’s most favourite tanners – selling one every 30 seconds worldwide. It’s popular for a reason – formulated with a unique colour-guide technology that contours and smooths the skin, it leaves the body looking bronzed and elongated with a natural glow.
