Now 32, the Fijian-born Australian has just released her new album, titled ‘Come Alive’, and her new single ‘By My Side’ is part of a heartfelt mix of soulful, pop, and R’n’ B tracks, written across the globe, from New York to Los Angeles, Paris, London and Germany.
Now firmly back in Australia, and with a renewed sense of self, which includes a love of health and fitness, Paulini shares her and beauty and wellbeing tips with Bondi Beauty.
1. It doesn’t matter what size you are (I feel I’ve been them all!) it’s how you feel and only you hold the power to be your best self.
2. Drink lots and lots (and lots) of water – I work through at least three litres a day, even more when I’m travelling for work but my skin certainly feels the difference when I’m not as hydrated.
3. Adjust your eating habits – if you’re having a “bad” week, don’t beat yourself up about eating some junk food, focus forward and try your best the next day to be as healthy as possible.
4. Yoga. It rests the mind, body and soul and I love the toning it does for my legs.
5. Being asked to become the Ambassador for Running Heroes in Australia this year was an huge accomplishment for me – I felt it was something true to me, which I could share with an inspired community of likeminded runners – it has motivated me to run almost daily, and has given me a positive mindset, improving my fitness and my energy on stage. I can feel the difference in just the last three months since I increased my training.
6. I love to run – I put on my earphones, crank up the tunes and escape for 40 minutes whilst I release some endorphins and focus on something other than writing, recording or even performing.
7. Try for the 80/20 rule – be as good as you can be with your diet for 80% of the time and have cheat day every so often so that you can feel you’re not missing out on all the good stuff. I LOVE chocolate so the thought of not indulging in that breaks my heart…
8. I often spend 5-10 minutes in deep breathing exercises before a performance or a set, to get my mind and body centred. This is a little trick I picked up in yoga; it reduces the nerves on stage and keeps you sharp.
9. I often get asked about “that gold dress” from Australian Idol days, and every time I think back I remind myself to thank Dicko, because without his comments (although somewhat negative and not all that kind to a young performer) it did open up my mind to the education I needed for good eating and exercise which I have built on since then, and I try to pay it forward and inspire others to live a balanced life…
10. Rest is so important. I have lots of late nights working in the music industry, with gigs going into the wee hours of the morning so as often as I can, I try to get 8 hours of sleep. Some say that if you can’t exercise in the day but you get a great night’s sleep the benefits can be the same – I believe that.
