What is fat freezing?

Fat freezing, otherwise known as CoolSculpting or CoolTech, is a non-invasive, pain free cosmetic procedure that aims to get rid of fat in certain parts of the body.

Suprisingly, fat freezing can be accredited to children eating popsicles. Through the science of cryolipolsis, the basis of CoolSculpting, two scientists found children who frequently ate popsicles were forming dimples. This was due to the fat cells in the cheeks being frozen and killed. This formed the basis of the study which resulted in what is known today as fat freezing.

It uses cool temperatures, between -1 degree Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius, to reduce stubborn localised fat deposits by burning off fat cells. Since fat freezes at a higher temperature than the skin, it’s safe and leaves skin and other tissue unharmed.

How does fat freezing work?

Using cold technology, it targets fat cells and freezes them causing cell death. Dying cells are then processed and eliminated through the liver naturally by the body over time.

Side effects are minimal and temporary but include numbness, redness and swelling at affected areas. This is due to the cold temperatures experienced by the body.

Studies have found on average; the procedure lessens the amount of fat in the targeted areas by 10-25%.

Who is fat freezing for?

Fat freezing is not intended to treat obesity and is not a form of weight loss (instead think fat loss). It is often used in conjunction with diet and exercise, specifically targeting stubborn fat that is hard to get rid of. It is ideal for people with a BMI under 30.

As it isn’t a weight loss program or form of weight loss, avoid this procedure if there has been significant weight loss recently as this often results in loose skin that isn’t loaded with fatty plaques.

Ideal fat freezing treatment areas include the thighs, abdomen, back and sides, hips, arms, double chin, ‘love handles’, waist, under the butt, along the bra line and chin.

This treatment is specifically poplar due to the procedure requiring little to no downtime and most treatments usually taking minimal time; anywhere between 35-70 mins.

What happens during a fat freezing treatment?

An initial consultation outlining treatment expectations and reviewing medical history is necessary in ensuring the procedure is right for the client. All clients will also be measured and weighed to track results.

A mark up of the areas to be treated is outlined on the body with no more than two areas being treated at the same time.

While lying down, a CoolTech Gel pad is applied to the body before the Cool Tech applicator gets attached to the body. This is the device that reduces temperature of fat cells to the point where fat cell death occurs. Remember this is a no-needle, no cuts, non- invasive procedure. This only takes a few minutes and the body is quickly accustomed to the cold temperatures.

And it’s as easy as that. Applicators are removed and the treated area is cleaned and massaged. Due to no downtime necessary, clients are able to continue with daily activities including going to the gym or going back to work.
