Sneakers on the Runway… again.

Australian fashion is following in the footsteps of international shows – literally with sneakers on the runway.

It was beautiful to see our very own Aussie model of Aboriginal, Dutch, English and German decent, Samantha Harris walk the runway for Desert Designs at MBFWA.

Day one of Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week saw Australian labels, Desert Designs and Karla Spetic rock sneakers on the catwalk, proving this world-wide trend is not just something Chanel can do.

The insanely cool Bernhard Willhelm ‘Himalayan’ sneakers by Camper were seen in black and white, a perfect fit to match the rich and colourful Desert Designs runway show.

The Desert Designs Spring/ Summer 2014/15 collection is called Together, Towards the Water and it’s inspired by the stories and works of the late indigenous artist, Jimmy Pike.

The brand’s creative directors, Jedda-Daisy Culley and Caroline Sundt-Wels, are traditionally known for their respectful use of indigenous art in work.

“The print and colour is really what Desert Designs is all about,” the duo told The West Australian.

“There is nothing radically new in the shapes and the silhouettes, which are relaxed and casual – but what a vibrant conception of colour and print they celebrate in their work.”

Relaxed and casual is undoubtedly the style with a variety of lose-fit pants, dresses, sarongs, and swimwear in a kaleidoscope of graphics and colours.

Day one also witnessed the models at Karla Spetic’s poolside runway show sporting customized Reebok kicks styled with sheer silks and perfectly cut silhouettes.

The self-titled designer known for her relaxed tailoring, soft edges and light fabrics, kept things clean and fresh again this year.

High necks and flirty thigh-split skirts in soft pastels of the pink and white are looking to be a common trend for next summer.

Being the fitness girls we are, we are delighted to see designer fashion continuing to share the spotlight with sporting brands.
