The Most Iconic Outfits from The New Barbie Movie

Barbie and Ken from new Barbie movie (2023)

Here are some of the most fabulous and iconic outfits spotted in the new Barbie movie.

Director Greta Gerwig’s new film Barbie has taken the world by storm, being the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film directed by a woman. Millions of people have seen it worldwide, and it has already grossed over $1 billion in ticket sales alone.

Barbie has always been the blueprint for all young people; she is and can do everything.

One of the most outstanding elements of the film was the outfits.

The Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran is to thank for most of these Barbie looks. She has worked on some of the most memorable sets in the film industry, including Little Women (2019), Anna Karenina, which she won two Oscars for, Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Atonement. Durran says Barbie can wear anything, so she needed some ground rules.

“And one of the ground rules was that [Barbie] would always be perfectly dressed for whatever she was going to do. And it’s also ‘beautiful people in beautiful places doing beautiful things.’” Durran previously told Vanity Fair.

Barbie has lived through several decades and style evolutions, so it was important for Durran to show this through the costuming.

A fun fact about the set of Barbie is that Durran would match the pink of Barbie’s clothes to the exact shade of pink used on the set.

All of the Barbie’s and Ken’s have amazing outfits, from Ken’s fringe cowboy outfit to President Barbie’s pink jumpsuit to Weird Barbie’s pink puffy dress.

But stereotypical Barbie herself is at the roots of the Barbiecore aesthetic.

This Barbie always has an iconic outfit. Here are some of the Bondi Beauty favs.

The opening scene of Barbie pays homage to the first Barbie doll ever created, which was in 1959. It features the famous black-and-white striped swimsuit with an iconic blonde ponytail and curly fringe, gorgeous white sunglasses, and simple black mules.

This was a perfect opening scene, introducing everyone to the first Barbie ever made and how toys were transformed forever.

Cowgirl Barbie

Barbie’s cowgirl outfit is all pink, with some accents of little dark pink coloured stars on the top's collar and the bottom of the flare pants. The all-pink set is paired with a pink bandana and a white cowgirl hat.

The reveal of the cowgirl outfit had everyone amazed. In June 2022, Margot was spotted wearing the iconic outfit in Downtown Los Angeles.

Barbie’s most iconic look from the movie by far is the cowgirl look. When Barbie visits the Real World for the first time, she and Ken style themselves in cool country outfits from a random store on Venice Beach.

Margot Robbie and Barbie both have the same favourite designer, Chanel. Barbie rocked some of the most gorgeous looks that were archival Chanel. Two of our favourites at Bondi Beauty are some of the hottest pink moments of Barbie.

Creative director of Chanel Virginie Viard created five looks that appear in the movie: three suits and a dress for Robbie’s Barbie, plus a ski suit for Ryan Gosling’s Ken. They also provided iconic and signature Chanel accessories like sunglasses, quilted bags, and even a double-C charm necklace towards the film’s end.

One of the most memorable Barbie outfits was the Chanel archive tweed pink suit from the 90s. Supermodel Claudia Schiffer wore this on a Chanel runway in the 1990s.

Margot Robbie recalls her reaction to wearing some of the archival Chanel pieces in a video posted by Chanel.

“There were some incredible outfits that I actually got to wear that Claudia Schiffer herself, who’s kind of like a real-life Barbie, wore,” the actress says in the video. “In fact, one of the archival suits that I wore had a little label that said ‘Claudia’ on it. And I was like, ‘Wow!’”

When Barbie goes to Ken’s ‘Mojo Dojo Casa House’ to pretend to rekindle their relationship in an attempt to restore Barbie Land, Barbie wears a gorgeous hot pink tweed mini dress.

But the showstopper of the outfit was the iconic Chanel heart-shaped bag. The bag has the signature double-c logo in white, with a hot pink base shaped like a love heart.
