Dear Bondi Beauty,
I don’t have much of a beauty routine, and want to start one. What are the best products to help get me started?
Melanie, Mortdale

When it comes to adopting a good skincare routine it’s important to find something that not only works for your skin, but also works for you.

This means if you’re the type of person who is really not going to commit to a 10-step skincare routine, there is no point buying into brands which promote this type of skincare routine.

Skincare brands like Clinique, The Ordinary and Edible Beauty are all great brands to start with, as they sell specialised skincare sets designed to give you all that you need to cleanse, nourish and protect your skin with as minimal products as possible.

However, if you prefer to mix it up and cocktail your beauty – meaning: using a variety of different brands with key products to help get you started, here’s what we recommend as essentials in your skincare.

It’s best to keep it simple, especially when starting out for two reasons; not wasting money on products you don’t need. Maybe your skin only needs the basics. Secondly, if your skin has any adverse reactions to a product, it’s going to be challenging trying to figure out which one of the products from your 10-step routine is the culprite.

Start with four main products: a cleanser, a serum, a moisturiser and an SPF.

When it comes to serums if depends on what skin issues you have. However a very versatile and beneficial serum for most skin types is Vitamin C. Vitamin C serums are great at preventing pollution damage, and will also help brighten your skin. Pixi Vitamin-C Serum retails for $46.00 and works perfectly with a basic cleanser like Innisfree Green Tea Foam Cleanser.

For a moisturiser, try using a medium thickness face cream, which is light enough to wear in the day, but heavy enough for night to keep skin nice and hydrated. Bare Body Beauty’s Hemp Face Cream RRP $48 is perfect as a day and night cream, and there hemp ingredient of this cream means skin stays well hydrated in the day and the night.

Dear Bondi Beauty,
I’ve heard you should cleanse twice both morning and night. Is this right? And if I want to cleanse 3 times a day (I am a PT so often have to take my make-up off and re-apply), is that okay?
Lavina, Petersham

Whilst cleansing is important to maintain clean skin, over-cleansing can damage the skin’s barrier and may lead to an array of skin issues, such as hypersensitivity, acne, dermatitis and much more.

Depending on your skin type, cleansing once a day (typically of an evening) is more than enough, to keep skin clean and healthy. However, oily skin types and anyone starting their morning with a fitness workout, cleansing twice daily is recommeded to help balance oil and keep pores clean.

If you are washing your face three times a day, you need to find the reason why you are doing this. Is it because you feel like your face isn’t clean enough or still very oily? Or is it because you’ve just worked out and you feel gross?

If its the first option, its best to invest in a cleansing device like the Happy Skin Co Facial Cleansing Device which uses vibrations to deeply cleanse your skin. This device will leave your skin cleaner for longer without breaking the skins barrier.

However, if you do a midday workout or have been outdoors all day either working or for leaisue and your face feels dirty, try cleansing with a softer products like a micellar water or an oil cleanser, both of which don’t require water and are incredibly gentle on the skin to both cleanse and boost hydration.

Our Fave Beauty Product of the Week:

Skin Physics Oxygen-C Brightening Foaming Cleanser RRP $19.95 and the Vitamin C Brightening Sleep Mask RRP $39.95

Having grown up addicted to the very tangy Vitamin C drink TANG, I was obsessed with both of these products the moment I opened the bottle and applied it to my skin.

Think crushed vitamin C tablets in your skin care – yum. Of course, yum isn’t often a word associated with a skincare product. However, these products, especially the sleep mask will seriously have you salivating as you apply to your skin. If you love that rich vitamin C scent like me that is.

If you ever tried TANG, these products smell exactly like that – LOVE it.

The foam cleanser is Infused with natural Aussie Vitamin C sourced from the native Kakadu plum. It’s oil-free and is formulated to give you clean and clear skin without drying it out. From first use, the rich foam effectively removes dirt, excess oil and detoxifies impurities to thoroughly cleanse skin.

Massage onto damp skin, rinse thoroughly and gently pat dry. Use morning and night for refreshed skin.

The sleep mask (which I am seriously obsessing over), is also infused with the Aussie Native Kakadu Plum, considered to be the world’s richest source of natural Vitamin C.

The mask works through the night to nourish, hydrate and revive dull-looking skin for a refreshed and vibrant appearance.

Cleanse skin and pat dry. Apply a thick, even layer across face and neck before bedtime, avoiding the eye area. Massage into skin until spheres have perished. Leave overnight and rinse off in the morning.
