Renowned makeup Artist and YouTube sensation Nikkia Joy shares her top ten lifesaving makeup tips:
- Let your skincare sit on the skin for 10-15 minutes before applying your makeup. Most of us apply it straight after but your skin actually needs time to absorb it and allowing it to absorb properly will mean your makeup will apply smoother, and last longer during the day.
- Apply eye primer to your nose to prevent your makeup rubbing off/transferring off your nose during the day. You only need a tiny amount, apply it to your nose (and any other areas that your makeup tends to rub off of during the day) and then apply your foundation over the top.
- Using a translucent setting powder under foundation (such as the Nikkia Joy Cosmetics Velvet Finishing Powder) will help your makeup last longer. After applying your primer, use a fluffy powder brush to apply a small amount of translucent powder all over your face before going in with your foundation. It will help your makeup look smoother, stay shine free, hold up better against sweat and last all day.
- If you have trouble getting your lipstick to last all day try applying a lip liner under the lipstick first. Trace the lips with your chosen shade, then fill them in before applying lipstick over the top. It will hold your lip colour in place much longer and prevent your lipstick bleeding.
- If you have a favourite foundation that is more on the full coverage side and you’re wanting to achieve more of a natural look for everyday wear, try mixing a couple drops into your daily moisturiser on the back of your hand. It will transform the foundation into a more natural/sheer coverage formula.
- Got a nasty blemish that you’re wanting to cover? Try applying a concealer in a slightly darker shade than your foundation colour (rather than your usual concealer shade). The slightly darker pigments will counteract the redness of the blemish and will hide it much better than a lighter concealer would.
- Your favourite lipstick can be used for so much more than just on your lips. If you’re in a rush and need a pulled together look, you can apply some of your lipstick to the crease of your eyes with a fluffy blending blush and also dab it onto your cheeks.
Using similar shades on your eyes, cheeks and lips is an old makeup artist trick that makes it look like you spent hours doing your makeup. - We have all been taught to apply powder with a brush to set our makeup but applying it on a damp sponge (for example, our Pro Plus Perfecting Sponge) actually gives much smoother, and more flawless results. Using a damp makeup sponge, dip the end into your translucent powder and then use it to gently press powder all over your skin to lock your makeup in.
It will transform your skin, making it appear airbrushed and smooth, will hide texture and will also help your makeup stay put longer during the day. - If you’re having trouble mastering the winged eyeliner look there’s actually a super easy trick to get it perfect every time. Take a piece of sticky tape and press it on the back of your hand a few times to take away some of the tackiness and then imagining a straight line between the outer corner of your eye and the tip of your brow, apply the tape along this line and use it to draw your eyeliner up against.
Once you have finished, simply remove the tape and you will have a perfectly clean wing every time. - If you’re new to false eyelashes and find them a little daunting, you can chop them into multiple pieces (usually 2 or 3 pieces works best) and apply them piece by piece. This also gives you more flexibility to customise and layer the look or just use one piece at the outer corner of your eyes as an accent lash.
Our Erin Lashes are already separated and designed for sensitive eyes so these are an easy option for this technique.
