If you really want to join a gym in 2015, but feel the fear of a child starting a new school, read on.
Bondi Beauty’s survival guide from Sydney PT Rachel Livingstone for joining a new gym, will give you the best tips to make it a pain free experience – at least until you are feeling the muscle burn.
Top of the list for New Year resolutions is often a health, fitness or weight loss goal.
The fitness industry knows this and gyms will ramp up their advertising, introduce not-to-be-missed deals and welcome you in the door.
The head stuff
- Everyone else there is looking to achieve something or improve themselves, not just you.
- In an age of exhibitionism and ‘the selfie’, people are too interested in their own workout to notice yours and certainly don’t know you gained 5k last year.
- Everyone had a first day – it might have been 10 years ago, in another gym, but they had a first day too.
- Don’t compare yourself, on workout one, with someone else who is on workout 4657 – give yourself a chance.
The practical stuff
- Dress to be cool and comfy. Wear the right bra according to ‘bounce’ factor. Waist bands that roll down and tops that show too much when you lean forward, will give you extra worries you don’t need.
- Ask a friend or work colleague who belongs to the same gym if you can join them the first time. You don’t need to train together. Just knowing they are on the premises can provide enough moral support.
- Ask the club for a tour that includes everything you need to know – the changing rooms, the lockers and earphone attachments. If you can’t remember something, ask. They are there to help.
- Book a session with a trainer to either get a program to follow or to teach you how to use the different machines.
- Look at the class timetable and see what tickles your fancy – be bold and try different classes until you find the ones you enjoy the most.
Remember, if you don’t do it this year you will be in the same situation at the end of 2015 with another year gone past.
