To find out which products work best for your hair, the first step is to test your hair porosity.
Knowing your hair porosity, will help you better understand how your hair absorbs moisture. The higher the porosity, the more moisture your hair loses.
TAKE THE HAIR POROSITY TEST:
To test, grab a glass of water and make sure it’s room temperature. Then place a few strands of loose hair into the glass and wait around 2-4 minutes.
How to read the results.
LOW POROSITY:
If your hair strands float, you have low porosity. This means hair has a tight cuticle and has a hard time absorbing moisture. This also means hair has a regular product build up, as it doesn’t absorb the products properly.
SOLUTION: Try a deep conditioner at least once a week to help hair stay nourished and absorb moisture.
MEDIUM HAIR POROSITY:
If your hair floats in the middle, then you have medium hair porosity. The cuticles of the hair are less tightly bound, and moisture is staying in.
SOLUTION: Keep on track with your regular hair routine of washing at least once a week, and a treatment every couple of weeks should do the trick to keep hair well hydrated.
HIGH HAIR POROSITY:
If your hair sinks to the bottom of the glass, you have high hair porosity. This means hair has an open cuticle and easily absorbs moisture. However, it also means hair can lose moisture as fast as it absorbs it, as the cuticle is wide open.
SOLUTION: Always use a heat protectant when styling hair, and deep condition hair regularly.
