New Canadian research claims overweight and obese people die younger, are more prone to disease, and cannot, medically speaking, be truly fit.
The researchers claim they’ve proved you cannot be overweight and fit – it’s just not physically possible.
Research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, shows high blood pressure, poor blood sugar control and high blood fats are important disease indicators, but excess weight itself remains critical.
The study claimed that seriously overweight people who displayed none of these health issues were still found to die younger than people within the normal weight range.
Participants in the studies were classified by their Body Mass Index (BMI), which provides weight guidelines based on height. The studies also measured lipid profile (blood fats), glucose tolerance (sugar), blood pressure and waist circumference.
The study suggested that “fat and fit” participants who were deemed to have good metabolic features but a higher than normal BMI, were still more likely to die at a younger age or have heart problems in the long term than a person categorised in a normal weight range.
Despite having a healthy BMI, normal-weight individuals can also be unhealthy. Displaying symptoms such as high blood pressure or poor sugar control results in a poor metabolic profile.
Dr Ian Campbell, a GP and medical Director of the charity Weight Concern says that: “Studies conclude that being overweight or obese make you more prone to disease and premature death.”
Dr Campbell recommends getting fit and healthy as it aids weight loss and will potentially prevent the metabolic effects of being unhealthy and/or fat.
The scientists, from the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto used eight studies, conducted extensive research involving 61 000 people , from 1950 to the present day, to find out whether metabolic issues were linked to premature death and heart disease in people within the normal weight range, overweight and obese people.
