Stand Up paddle-boarding (SUP-ING) looks tricky. It is one of the few sports where you really do need a lesson initially to know how to stand-up, steer and how to fall down (the least painful way).

But it’s one of the best ways to tone up, stay in shape and enjoy the water in a whole new way. The trend is sweeping the world.

Bondi Beauty spoke to Sydneysider Charlotte Piho, who has been SUPPING for years and when not surfing or running in Bondi, she runs her own SUPPING school in Sydney’s Rose Bay.

BB:  Do you have to be fit already to be able to SUP?

Charlotte: No, you just need to be able to swim 50 metres ( in case you fall off). It’s a sport anyone can master, so is suitable for anyone.

BB: How long does it take to learn?

Charlotte: After a 1hour beginner’s lesson you will have the ability to go paddling on your own.

BB: Does it always have to be done in a group?

Charlotte: Not at all. I paddle on my own all the time. The beauty of paddling though is the ability to chat and share the experience with others so people often do in a group.

BB: What should I wear? (Can I wear something over my bikinis as I am body conscious)?

Charlotte: Absolutely. You can wear anything you don’t mind getting wet, bearing in mind if you do fall in a lot of clothing can prove to be super uncomfortable. A lot of my customers wear shots and a singlet or T-shirt.

BB: Will it hurt if I fall in?

Charlotte: Paddleboards are the best Yoga mat in the world if you fall in, you land in the water which is often a welcome relief when you have been on top of the water for a while.

BB: Could I get lost at sea?

Charlotte: Not if you go to a licensed school. In my business workout on water, we always let students know if it’s unsafe to paddle in different winds.

BB: How much does it cost?

Charlotte: $50 a lesson which includes all equipment. $100 for 3 lessons or $150 for 5 lessons.
