This Y2K Eyeshadow Trend is Back and Better Than Ever

This Y2K inspired eyeshadow trend has been brought back from the 1990’s and 2000’s, and it’s better than ever.

Frosted eyeshadow has been reappearing recently on celebrities such as Doja Cat, Zendaya, Dua Lipa, Hailey Bieber, and Euphoria characters such as Maddy (Alexa Demie), Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), Kat (Barbie Ferreira) and Jules (Hunter Schafer). What is Frosted Eyeshadow?

Frosted eyeshadow involves using cool colours, like blue, pink, silver, or gold, to create a gradient of colours across the eyes ranging from light to dark, resulting in a bold and fun makeup look. Frosted eyeshadow can also be done in a single coverage colour to elevate a makeup look by adding a pop of colour.

Before Jumping on the Frosted Eyeshadow Trend:

Before jumping on the frosted eyeshadow trend, it’s important to know what eye shape the eyeshadow is best for, and how it can be applied in the most effective way for that shape. Check out this image to see what eye shapes there are.

Another hot tip to know before any eyeshadow application is to know the lingo and understand which part of the eye is what.

This photo guide is a gamechanger for applying eyeshadow, it explains which part of the eye is what, and what colours to use for a neutral makeup look.

Another insider tip is knowing what each brush does for the best application. Knowing what brush works best for frosted eyeshadow and the touch ups at the end, will leave the eyeshadow looking its best and lasting its longest.

The next step is choosing the right eyeshadow, the cool colours are what makes the eyeshadow look frosty. Knowing between cream eyeshadow, loose eyeshadow, and pressed eyeshadow is a must as each of these do different things.

Cream eyeshadow works best for a base colour for the powder eyeshadow, and for a solid single colour coverage. Loose eyeshadows are known for having the most colour pigment, but are messy to work with so it’s best to do the eyeshadow look before applying foundation to avoid any fallout of the product onto the face, and finally, pressed eyeshadows are great because they blend easily and aren’t very messy.

The Infinite Chrome Flakes Multichrome Gel for Eyes & Face from Sephora is the perfect frosty colour to achieve the frosted eyeshadow look.

How to create a Frosted Eyeshadow makeup look

Primer

Before applying any eyeshadow, it’s important to apply an eyeshadow primer, as this makes it last much longer and stay in place. Frosted eyeshadow can be done as a single colour coverage, or as a gradient. Regardless, there needs to be a solid base. This can be as simple as applying foundation to the eyelids or a cream eyeshadow as a base. Applying a primer beforehand makes a huge difference to the way the eyeshadow sticks to the eyelids.

Application

The key to creating a perfect frosted eyeshadow look is to press the product onto the eyelid rather than rubbing it with a brush. A dome shaped sponge eyeshadow applicator is perfect for pressing product onto the eyelids as it will allow the eyeshadow to set properly.

Apply the chosen eyeshadow colour across the eyelid for an icy look, the best colours for this step are white, light blue, light pink, sliver, or gold.

Shimmery Outline

If creating a gradient look, the next step is to add a shimmery shadow outline after the first colour. This colour should be slightly darker than the first colour and have a slight shimmer to it. This creates depth in the eyeshadow look and looks amazing after mascara and eyeliner have been applied.

Crease

Next, apply a darker shade to the crease, colours that work well are darker blue, pink, silver, or gold. A larger fluffier brush works best for this step as it allows the eyeshadow to blend between the brow bone and eyelid.

Set

To make the eyeshadow last it’s a good idea to apply a product like the Make Up For Ever Star Lit Diamond Powder to set the eyeshadow and give it an extra sparkle.

Complete

To complete the look add eyeliner and mascara. The Long Lasting Eyeliner High Precision Brush Eyeliner from Sephora works amazingly paired with the Maybelline Colossal Curl Bounce Volume Mascara in the colour Blackest Black.

Creating a frosted eyeshadow look is completely customisable, so use this as more of a guide rather than a tutorial. For a frosted eyeshadow look tutorial this video by Ash K Holm is a great place to start.
