Butter Cofee is the new, er, black, according to NYC baristas.

Butter-Coffee is a taste and a paleo diet sensation, and there are claims it can “supercharge your brain function and create effortless fat loss with no cravings.”

The Deal

Originally from New York the Bulletproof method has become an international sensation, popularised by paleo dieters. The concept was created by Bulletproof Executive Founder Dave Asprey, an investor and technology entrepreneur who works every day to reach the goal of finding “the simplest ways to be better at everything”.

While ordinary coffee should be an addition to your meal, butter enhanced coffee can be drunk as a total meal replacement.

The Ingredients

Inspired by yak butter tea, a traditional Tibetan tea, Asprey says the ingredients in Bulletproof coffee enable you to “supercharge your brain function and create effortless fat loss with no cravings”. His optimised version specifies unsalted grass-fed butter, MCT oil and “upgraded” coffee beans, which for Asprey means coffee beans that have been harvested to reduce the occurrence of mycotoxins.

1.     High-quality coffee beans

The most obvious difference between the levels of coffee quality is taste, which is highly important. There are other sinister effects that unclean coffee can have on your performance. Your coffee beans can be home to a variety of toxins and can cause you to crash and make you moody. Premium coffee ensures you get all the antioxidant benefits without the mycotoxins and nasty side effects like headaches and jitters.

2.     MCT oil

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s) are fats naturally found in small doses in coconut and palm kernel oil. Science shows that MCT’s are easily and rapidly digested which means most is burned as energy and little stored as fat. Users boast an increase in energy levels and support in weight management, as many studies also suggest.

What’s also great about MCT oil is that it is odourless, flavourless and colourless so you can use it as a substitute for other fats in a healthy diet. As well as using it in your coffee, try it on your salads and in your smoothies.

3.     Unsalted grass-fed butter

Fat is an essential part of our diet and grass-fed butter is being called a ‘good fat’, even a superfood by many nutritionists. Better than organic, unsalted grass-fed butter is high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats and healthy cholesterol.

The Bulletproof method takes the use of butter to the next level by using premium ghee which is a clarified, unsalted and cultured butter.  It has been around for thousands of years, used primarily in Indian cuisine and medicine. It’s lactose and casein free which means it’s good for those who are lactose intolerant and stick to a paleo diet. It is also said to be good for nerves, the brain and in aiding digestion.

When you blend all the ingredients (as required) the butter gives your coffee a creamy, frothy consistency.

Do It Yourself

It can be pricey and difficult to find some of these ingredients but it is important to stick to them. Blogger Hustlingtime has sourced the easiest to find and cheapest to buy brands without substituting quality.

  1. 200g Woolworths Macro Peruvian Coffee Beans – approx. AU$7.00
  2. 1000ml NOW Foods MCT Oil (from iHerb.com) – approx. AU$27.11 (incl. shipping to AUS)
  3. 250g Woolworths Homebrand Unsalted Butter (confirmed to be grass-fed) – approx. AU$1.39

You can find a lot of alternatives on the web or even make your own version; some people stick to their own coffee or use coconut oil instead of MCT oil. You can purchase Asprey’s Bulletproof coffee products exclusively through the official website www.bulletproofexec.com or www.optimoz.com.au for Australian and New Zealand customers. The product can be shipped worldwide so check out either of these sites to find destinations and rates.
