From crisp coastal dips to harbour swims, discover the go-to spots for Sydneysiders easing back into the water before summer (and braving the chill for that post-swim glow!)

If you’ve ever walked the Bondi to Bronte trail or clutched an oat latte while admiring Sydney’s shimmering coastline, you’ve probably felt the magnetic pull of the ocean – even before summer officially hits.

The water might still have a crispt bite, but Sydneysiders are diving back in, chasing that refreshing reset that comes with a cool spring swim. Think circulation-boosting therapy, an instant mood lift, and that addictive post-dip endorphin rush.

Whether you’re levelling up your routine or craving that pre-summer glow, here are the most breathtaking (and Instagram-worthy) spots to swim in Sydney this spring – if you’re game.

Bondi Icebergs Pool

We may be biased but Bondi Icebergs is the ultimate location for a proper September swim and a photogenic one at that. With the iconic Winter Swimming Club still running through spring’s early week’s, it’s cemented its status as the OG of chilly ocean dips. The vibe is classic Bondi, with health-conscious swimmers, ocean views and a post-swim brunch at one of our nearby favourites. Entry is $10, and if the plunge proves too intense, there’s a sauna to warm up in afterwards.

Shelly Beach Manly

Away from the swell and buzz of Manly Beach, Shelly Beach is calm, protected, and perfect for a gentle spring ocean dip. It’s a favourite among year-round swimmers, especially for the community-led Bold and Beautiful swim group, who swim from Manly to Shelly daily. For those not after a 750m swim, the coastal chilled vibe makes it ideal for first-time cold plungers or anyone easing back into ocean swimming. After your swim, warm up with a coffee (or hot chocolate) at The Boathouse Shelly Beach, just steps from the sand.

Balmoral Beach Mosman

Balmoral Beach is more sheltered than Sydney’s surf beaches, making it ideal for a calm, classy spring dip. Surrounded by moored yachts and a charming heritage pavilion, it feels more like a luxury retreat than your average plunge. As a harbour beach, the calm water makes it perfect for wellness lovers who prefer a peaceful paddle over more vigorous conditions. After your swim, warm up with a coffee at The Boathouse Balmoral or enjoy a leisurely brunch at Bathers’ Pavilion, both just a short stroll from the shorelines.

Shark Beach Vaucluse

Tucked inside the Sydney Harbour National Park, Nielsen Park’s Shark Beach offers a spring swim with views and tranquility to match. After a 3-year closure for seawall renovations, Shark Beach has now reopened to display its scenic surroundings. Ideal for those seeking a gentler ocean experience without the waves, and the grassy parklands just behind the beach make it easy to stretch out and soak up some sun after your dip. Whether you’re taking a solo plunge or meeting friends for a weekend ritual, it’s a peaceful, scenic spot that blends nature with a dose of quiet luxury.

Coogee Beach

Coogee Beach brings a lively energy to your swim lineup, with a buzzing local community and multiple ocean pools to choose from. For a more serene experience, head to McIver’s Ladies Baths, a women and children only pool with panoramic views and a rich history dating back to the 1880s. Just around the corner, Wylie’s Baths offers another alternative for everyone, set against a dramatic rocky coastline. Warm up post-swim at one of the nearby cafes lining the promenade.

Tips for your dip:

  • Start slow: Ease in gradually, especially if you’re new to cold-water immersion or early spring dips
  • Layer up: A plush towel, oversized puffer, or robe will be your best friend after a brisk dip
  • Bring company: Swimming with friends makes the chill easier to tackle – and way more fun!
  • Wetsuits welcome: If you’re not quite ready to brave it in bikinis, a neoprene wetsuit or vest can help you ease in

Want to level up your plunge with a wellness reward?

Slow House Bondi is the ultimate winter indulgence. Think infrared saunas, ice baths (if the ocean isn’t cold enough) and premium recovery experiences designed to soothe your nervous system.
