What are they?
This trending super food contains a multitude of nutrients to help your body perform better on just about every level. From high omega 3 levels to protein and fibre, don’t let their size fool you – they’re packed with nutritional value.
Chia seeds are a small oval seed, of about 1mm in diameter. Generally they come in either black or white. The colour of the seed does not affect the nutrient value, it is just an option given to you so that you can determine whether you want to see them in their food or not. Chia seeds are easy to add to any meal so there’s no excuse for not adding them into your daily diet. In 2008, Australia was the largest producer of chia seeds.
Why are they good for you?
These little seeds are full of nutritional value. Chia seeds are the highest plant based source of Omega 3, fibre and protein. Chia seeds are gluten free and high in antioxidants. Packed full of Omega 3, a 15 gram (one tablespoon) serving of Chia has approximately 8 times more Omega 3 than a 150gram piece of salmon.
Chia seeds can be used as a vegan replacement for eggs in recipes. Just combine the seeds with water to form a gel. As well as being a good supplement for egg, these little seeds are great for digestion, as they’re packed full of fibre.

Where can you get them?
Nowadays, as Chia seeds are so popular they are available at chemists, supermarkets, local farmers markets and just about everywhere else that has a healthy range of food and vitamin products.
Black or white?
The nutritional differences between the different coloured seeds are little to none. White seeds are available for aesthetic appeal – not everyone wants to see them in their food.
