Zero Gravity: The Ultimate Way to Chill Out

Spending one hour in a pod filled with water and Epsom salts may just be the answer to achieving complete relaxation.

You may never have heard of Zero Gravity Therapy, but the concept is pretty simple.

You lie naked in a plastic pod (called a float pod), which has been filled with skin temperature water mixed with 600kg of Epsom salts and spend the next 60 minutes simply chilling out.

The theory behind the treatment is that after 40 minutes of relaxing, your brain shifts into theta waves. Theta waves is a barely conscious state – that moment just before sleeping and just before waking.

Studies show, it’s in this theta state the body is able to repair and relax without the stress of any other senses getting in the way, like; touch, feel and sound.

We sent writer Rebecca Wilkinson along to try it.

“Upon my arrival, after meeting the manager Paul; who gives me a rundown on what to expect, I’m left to strip naked in the privacy of my own room and enter into the pod. There is a lock on the door to make sure no one enters whilst your floating in the nude.

The main lights to the room dim, leaving only the glow of a neon light in the pod. This light is optional and can be switched off if you prefer to float in the dark. Being claustrophobic I decided to float with the pod lid open, but do decide to switch the neon light off. I was then floating in utter darkness.

It doesn’t last long before I freak out and switch it back on. It took me a while to re-settle, but when I finally do, the sensation is beautiful. Although I don’t fall asleep, I do completely zone out and lose all sense of time. I felt completely relaxed by the time my session has come to an end.

Would I float again?

Absolutely. I’m told you need at least 3 sessions to benefit from the therapy.”
