The BB Team Reveal The Inside Story On Being a Beauty Writer

What it's like being a beauty writer

The Bondi Beauty team talk about the good the beautiful job of being a beauty writer.

BB Beauty Writer says: “When I first started writing about beauty, the challenge of making a product sounds exciting was super scary. How on earth was I going to write about five face serums, which on the outside looked the same, but were really very different on the inside? As well as, make an audience connect with each and every product.

The idea that a simple story chatting about different beauty products, explaining how each one is different from the other and why someone would want to buy it was overwhelming and daunting, to say the least.

Over the last five years, I have worked to develop the skills needed to be open and transparent when it comes to writing about beauty, with the hopes of developing a trustworthy voice to our audience, where they can rely on our beauty reviews and feel confident they are buying the right products for themselves.

Of course, having a good mentor like BB founder Renae has been absolutely amazing. And I certainly advise anyone who wants to pursue a career in writing about beauty, to find themselves a mentor who has loads of experience doing it first.

BB writer Zoe says her favourite thing about writing beauty, is that she gets to trial so many great beauty products.

“Usually, once I find I product I love, I stick to it. Because I’m apprehensive to try new things that may not be worth it. There’s nothing worse than spending $50 on a new foundation or mascara, only to find it makes you break out, or irritates your eyes.

Becoming a beauty writer has allowed me to experiment with products I wouldn’t normally purchase and has made me more creative in my beauty choices, without worrying I’ll break the bank.”

BB founder Renae says she loves road testing new products to see if they live up to their promises.

“I hope it helps women make the right decision on their beauty purchases for their skin and beauty routine. Beauty has evolved considerably over the past decade and continues to. I love seeing the new packaging, trying new formulations and learning about new breakthroughs in the world of beauty.

The new range of stand-alone brands like Fenty Beauty, Kat Von D, Jo Loves and Trinny London are just a few examples of how amazingly creative, ambitious women are changing the face of the beauty world internationally.”

BB writer Anisha says the best thing about beauty writing is having the opportunity to deviate from her normal, lacklustre beauty routine.

“From trialling new products to practising the hottest beauty tips on yourself, you are constantly gathering intel to add to your own bank of beauty knowledge. The experimental side of beauty writing is a challenging yet fun experience to be a part of.

Whether that means trying to come up with a niche way to describe a certain colour or differentiating between two very similar hair products.”

For BB writer Tara, she sees makeup and beauty as artistry, a way of one being able to enhance one’s features to foster confidence. She says: “I love writing about beauty products and concepts, which help women achieve maximum confidence in the way they look and feel.

Whether that be through a smoky eye look, or a natural beauty look; aka the no makeup, makeup look or something else.

The challenge is, to write about a product in a way that will help women understand how that product can help them.”
