Stephanie Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw’s cooking hacks for beginners

The founders of the Keep It Cleaner program, Stephanie Claire Smith and Laura Henshaw, also models and besties,  share their top tips on how to master your way in the kitchen.

Is cooking not part of your repertoire? No worries. Discover our easy cooking hacks for delicious and healthy meals.

Food is such a big part of our lives. It not only fuels and nourishes us, but eating out or cooking are times when we catch up with friends and family, share news and secrets, and laugh and cry.

To inspire your kitchen table (and to free you up so you can spend more time eating your delicious creations), here are our favourite kitchen tips and tricks.

  1. Let’s spoon.

When you peel ginger with a knife or peeler, you often lose all the yummy flesh – what a waste! Instead, use a teaspoon to gently peel off the skin.

  1. Hard avocados?

We all love smashed avo – but it’s a pain when they’re too hard to mash. To help them ripen, put your avocados in a bowl with bananas. (Trust us, this really works.) And remember to scoop the flesh out with a spoon… so easy!

  1. Creamy smoothies.

Don’t you hate it when there’s not quite enough milk left over for a drink, but you don’t want to throw it out? Instead of pouring it down the sink, pour it into an ice-cube tray and add the frozen cubes to your favourite breakfast smoothies.

  1.  Freeze grapes.

This is one of the best-kept secrets ever. Frozen grapes taste like sorbet. We like to freeze grapes and even berries so when we’re craving something sweet, we can enjoy a guilt-free treat.

  1.  Golden onions.

How good are sautéed onions? However, sometimes they brown too quickly. To save your onions, just add an ice cube to the pan. The water will evaporate and your onions will be sautéed to perfection.

  1. Slippery chopping board?

Don’t put your fingers at risk. Instead, lay some damp paper towel under your cutting board. The resulting friction will keep that cutting board in place which makes dicing tomatoes and chopping onions a whole lot easier.

  1. Salty soup?

We season our cooking (not too much) but sometimes it takes practice to not over season. We are no chefs, and Laura admits she used to burn toast! Always taste the dish as you go. But, if you’ve made a batch of soup and you feel it tastes too salty, add a peeled potato to the pot – it’ll soak up any extra salt (eating the potato is optional!).

  1. Perfect skewers.

We love barbeques and making our own skewers – we load them with veggies and halloumi. However, bamboo is easy to burn. To save the skewer, soak them in cold water for an hour before cooking.

  1. Simple is best.

It’s great to follow a recipe, but anything too complicated and we tend to not stick around! Simple foods with quality ingredients cooked well are often delicious – so we don’t need fancy recipes for food to taste good!
