Want to know what the threshold is before coffee become dangerous and too much? A new study has shocked health experts.

Who doesn’t love a good coffee or 5 a day? A study conducted by the University of South Australia found that drinking more than 6 cups a day increased the risk of heart disease by 22%.

Coffee is the chocolate cake of the caffeine world, tastes so good but has always been framed as bad for the diet. Unsure if the average person consumes more than 3-4 coffees a day 6 may be a stretch but the study provided enlightenment on the debated topic.

6 coffees a day? Too much or not enough?

The study focused on caffeine-metabolizing gene CYP1A2, which is essentially better processing for caffeine. Caffeine- metabolizing gene CYP1A2 is the main enzyme responsible for the metabolism of coffee.

Technically the study identified the consumption habits that increased and lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Socially, mentally and physically coffee is great (see if coffee is good or bad for you). From heading to a café with the girls or grabbing one on the run from the gym or to work, coffee is the perfect compliment to the situations at hand. “Coffee is the most commonly consumed stimulant in the world – it wakes us up, boosts our energy and helps us focus – but people are always asking ‘How much caffeine is too much?’,” asked Prof Hyppönen of University of South Australia.

Although, Nutritional consultant Sangeeta Khanna claims that the “negative advances from execsive caffeine consumpstion leeches calcium from the bones”. Excessive caffeine is highly vulnerable to digestive issues like high acidity, reflux and poor absorption of minerals.

Additionally, another study by JAMA Internal Medicine journal found that coffee and mortality have a relationship and it complements the less than six coffees a day theory.

The study found after a 10 year follow up of people who drank 2-6 coffees a day for 10 years “were about 10 percent to 15 percent less likely to die than abstainers.”

So how much coffee is too much?

Naturally caffeine intake every single day isn’t great for the diet but isn’t necessarily bad in moderation. “Drinking coffee is typically safe for adults; however, drinking more than six cups a day might cause ‘caffeinism’ with symptoms such as restlessness, insomnia and diuresis,” says Kannikar Thepsri, health and wellness advisor, Chiva-Som Wellness Retreat.

Thepsri suggests “moderate consumption, which I recommend, is the best way to enjoy coffee’s benefits without any side effects.”
