How To Manage your Curly Hair

We caught up with 2019 All Stars Voice contestant Prinnie Stevens ambassador of the Love Your Curls Event in Sydney.

Married with two girls, fourteen years and fourteen months old, Prinnie, who has been a performer since the age of nine, knows the challenges of dealing with erratic curls from day to day.

She faces the same troubles all women do who have curly hair; finding the right products to use and keeping her hair tamed in extreme weather environments.

Living in Sydney, Prinnie is Tongan heritage and was raised in the northern beaches, surrounded by salty air and a climate which either worked in her favour to keep hair natural and curly, or worked against her drying it out and leaving it frizzy.

I sat down with Prinnie to chat about how she manages her curls now as an adult, when busy managing a young family and the lifestyle of a celebrity.

How do you manage your curly hair when managing a family and a celebrity lifestyle?

“Well for girls with curls it’s hard to do this journey alone. There are three of us in the house and all of us have totally different types of curls. Some more defined, some more wavy and some have combination hair. The amount of hair products in our household is embarrassing, lol.

It’s a constant journey to not only find the right products but to figure out the right quantities and routine for each of us. Which every girl with curls can relate to.”

Are there any secrets you have learned in the celebrity business, on how to better manage your curly hair?

“The best advice anyone can give to any girl with curls, is to avoid heat and moisturise moisturise moisturise.

Curly hair needs attention, if you ignore it, it won’t go away it will only get worse. It needs constant attention. Embracing the curls is the best thing for you! And it feels great! Celebrate your differences.

I became known for my BIG hair, but its hard to maintain for shows and to constantly produce this look, but practice is key.”

What was it like dealing with curly hair growing up, compared to today, where technology and products for curly hair have radically changed (for the better) over the last ten years or so?

The difference between now and when I was growing up is night and day. We now have access to all the products we want and need.

And YouTube will save you. Girls with curls are always looking for new ideas. With my girls we like to keep it natural, so when looking for inspiration with braids and twist outs and things like that there are just so many YouTube tutorials that can help you find new inspiration.

And now we have the Love My Curls Festival which is amazing because it’s bringing the curly community together and giving us a space to connect and swap ideas and tips. Because like I said it’s a constant journey.”

What are your own personal secrets and self-care tips in managing curly hair?

“I try to keep my hair away from heat as much as possible, which sometimes is very hard with my line of work. But I try. And also, treat your hair well.

Always moisturising, keeping the moisture in is the secret to keeping your curls healthy and happy. And finding a good hairdresser, one who knows what they’re doing when it comes to trimming and shaping curly hair is essential.”

What is your AM to PM routine for managing curly hair?

“Every day is different with curly hair. As we know, wash day is nevertheless best day, its usually the day or two after. But the aim is to always keep the moisture in and let the curl shine.”

Can you also share what your AM to PM beauty routine is?

“I’m in my my thirties, and I have to look after my skin. The best beauty routine is lots of water and eating well. On top of that, cleansing and finding a great moisturiser is key to keeping skin looking young and healthy.

I find with my skin I’ve always had to find a thick moisture, not unlike my hair. LOL.”
