The Importance of Hydration and Gut Health

If you are well hydrated, your gut health will remain balanced and healthy strong.

Keeping the gut well hydrated and healthy plays a vital role in maintaining your overall health.

According to studies by the Australian Bureau of Statistics approximately 80 percent of Aussies are dehydrated.

The stats found that 49% falsely believe they should drink two litres of water a day to stay hydrated when really it depends on your age, diet, levels of activity and the weather, so in essence many Australians are simply not drinking enough.

We all need to drink more water to ensure we have a healthy immune system, functioning digestive system, healthy skin, hair, joints and organs. 75% of our muscles are made of water and we need to keep them hydrated to ensure they are functional.

And as far as gut health goes staying hydrated and drinking lots of water, at least 8 glasses a day, has a beneficial effect on the mucosal lining located around the gut and promotes a healthy balance of good bacteria which helps maintain healthy digestion and overall health for the gut. It also keeps your bowel movements regular.

But if the idea of drinking all that water daily sounds a little overwhelming. There are some other ways to stay hydrated outside of drinking just straight up water.

3 Ways to Stay Hydrated Instead of Just Drinking Water:

  1. Drinking herbal teas are a great way to stay hydrated if you struggle to drink water.
  2. Eat fruit and veggies which are high in water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, celery and oranges.
  3. Try adding some natural flavours to your water, such as lemon, cucumber or mixed berries to make it more palatable.

Think of the gut as an engine. It’s responsible for putting our bodies into working order. As it breaks down food, it absorbs nutrients which then support the body’s function from energy production, to hormone balance, skin health, As well as mental health. It even works to eliminate toxins and waste from the body.

Often, we don’t know or fully understand how the gut may be dehydrated. So, then what are some of the symptoms of gut hydration to help you identify if there is something is wrong?

If your gut is dehydrated, you may experience acid reflux as the stomach does not have enough water to produce digestive acid. You may also suffer from constipation, bloating and nausea as well as bad breath.

What are the best types of water to drink (then)? Is it alkaline, filtered, tap, cold or room temperature?

Some studies suggest that alkaline water might help slow bone loss, but it’s not clear if the benefit is maintained long term. Some say that alkaline water can help prevent disease, such as cancer and heart disease. However, there’s little evidence at this stage to support these claims.

In general, cold water benefits consist of delaying the increase in core body temperature; however, room temperature water proves slightly more beneficial when lifting weights.

Drinking purified water is beneficial as purification removes harmful metals such as lead, clay, chlorine, salt and sand. This can promote healthy skin, better scalp and hair health and digestion.

If you spend a lot of time on the road and don’t always have access to filtered water, the Brooke filtered water bottle is a fantastic option to filter water on the move.
