So Chocolate Doesn’t Give You Acne?

In the latest chocolate studies on whether eating chocolate causes blemishes or acne, the results are in: Chocolate doesn’t cause acne.

In the past, studies on whether chocolate can cause acne or not were always inconclusive, mostly due to added ingredients like milk and sugar often being found in chocolate, and being found as the leading cause as to why some people break out.

According to many dermatologists, there have been multiple conducted studies on whether chocolate can cause acne, irritate acne, or even worsen conditions. Most of these studies have concluded there’s no definitive answer to prove it does.

Diets high in sugar and fat can result in increased skin sebum production; the main cause of acne, but no evidence to date proves the innocent tasting cocoa bean is the cause of why so many people; of any age get acne.

In 2017, the University of Melbourne concluded eating chocolate doesn’t cause pimples. This is because the bacteria which forms acne normally lives in the oil glands on the face, back and chest of the body.

And, when the conditions are right this bacterium can multiply and produce inflammation in the form of a pimple. Which is not the result of eating chocolate.

Many participants in acne studies don’t eat chocolate at all during the research program and the results prove that in some cases the blemishes continue to appear even after removing chocolate from their diet altogether.

But, that’s not to say diet doesn’t play a part in causing acne. It can. It’s just that chocolate doesn’t.

Most studies on food and acne have shown that a diet of red meat, dairy, sugar and high carbs often found in bread, pasta and other shelf-based supermarket foods may and can lead to acne.

There have even been some studies to show life factors such as climate and stress are also the leading contributors.

But with respect to chocolate, its safe to say, if you’re reaching for the dairy-free, gluten-free and no added sugar type of chocolate, it’s a safe bet you won’t wake up to a savage breakout.
