Rachael Finch’s Tips to Beat the Bloat

No-one likes the look or feel of being bloated however it can happen pretty often – sometimes more than once throughout a day.

Belly bloat is usually a problem associated with digestion, where gas in the stomach causes it to expand.

If you’re experiencing bloating on a regular basis I would highly recommend seeing a trusted naturopath to help get to the root of the problem.

But, there are some things you can do to help avoid it – here are my top tips for managing and preventing bloating:

Eat slowly

It sounds simple but it’s so effective and we forget it all too often. Chewing your food properly and taking time over your meal will prevent unwanted air entering the gut, turning into gas and causing the bloat. Put your fork down every so often and take the time to tune in with your body and the surroundings.

Charcoal

If I do happen to eat something that doesn’t sit well in my stomach I take a couple of activated charcoal tablets shortly after. The charcoal binds to unwanted toxins and materials in the body to safely carry them out of the digestive track. ( You can buy charcoal tablets at the chemist).

Consume foods rich in probiotics

Foods like kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha and other fermented products will help to populate the gut with good bacteria and kill off the bad. A lot of bloating cases stem from too much bad bacteria in the gut so getting rid of them is key. Extra points if you can make your own ferments at home!

H2O + lemon

Despite thinking water contributes to a bloated stomach, drinking enough fresh water throughout the day will help flush out toxins, keep the body hydrated and the digestive track working efficiently. Adding a squeeze of lemon to your water will help fire up the digestive enzymes too.

Herbal tea

Tea has a long list of healing properties for the body. Some herbal teas can aid in digestion and help settle an upset stomach. Some of my favourites after a meal or whenever I feel bloated include peppermint, chamomile, turmeric and ginger teas.

Eat more veg

A diet high in fibre-rich vegetables will help keep you regular and feeling good. It’s fibre that binds to other elements in the digestive track to keep things moving along! I like to keep the skin on my veggies too as most fibre is contained there.
