A healthy gut is becoming increasingly important as studies have shown that healthy bacteria in the gut has great benefits to not just your physical health, but your mental health as well.
Before now, we were told probiotics were the essential ingredient for a healthy gut.
Alas, we have been missing a key piece of information; it is probiotics as well as prebiotics that make our gut nice and healthy.
So, what are prebiotics and how are they so vital yet so often missed?
Prebiotics act as the fuel for probiotics, like a car. If you don’t consume enough prebiotics, any probiotics you have consumed won’t have enough fuel to go the full distance.
It is estimated that less than 25% of Australian’s consume the recommended intake of prebiotics.
“Unless you are eating dandelion greens, chicory root, green bananas, legumes, or roasted and then cooled potatoes each day, it is unlikely that you are getting the recommended 5- 20g intake of prebiotics per day” says Kara Landau, dietitian and founder of Uplift Food.
Prebiotics are found in fibres; specifically soluble fibres and resistant starch. They fuel the growth of good bacteria in the gut and without them the probiotics won’t be doing their job correctly.
One reason is the rise of diets such as ketogenic, paleo, low carbohydrate and FODMAP, which don’t allow for enough soluble fibres and resistant starches in their diets.
Depending on you who you are, and what has been recommended to you by your doctor or dietitian, diets such as the ketogenic diet or FODMAP are necessary for overall health.
Kara Landau, author of The Clean Separation has come up with a solution for those who don’t want to change their diet, but still want to maximise gut health and feed the probiotics they are consuming without compromise.
A powder called Uplift Food.
