Post Workout Drinks That Aren’t Just Water

Hydration is key when you’ve just finished a killer gym session, but if you could switch up that less than inspiring glass of water for something more vibrant and energising, why wouldn’t you?

Here are 5 healthy post-workout drinks to get your energy up so you can have a productive rest of the day.

Watermelon and Basil Water

This natural, fruity elixir is simply delicious, not to mention amazing for your insides.

Watermelon consists of 90% water and is packed full of natural electrolytes such as magnesium and potassium.

Both these miracle minerals are vital for a proper post workout recovery as they re-introduce electrolytes into the body that you lose during a strenuous workout according to Mindbodygreen.

Whilst some might consider watermelon and basil an odd pairing, the ridiculously easy recipe lends itself to being quite adaptable if you want to put your own spin on things.

The Nutrition Twins, registered dietitian nutritionists are a New York based duo who swear by this delicious detox drink.

Cherry Juice

Plain and simple, a tart cherry juice is all you need to recover from aching muscles after a weights session at the gym.

According to a study by the British Journal Of Sports Medicine, cherries contain an arsenal of antioxidants and reduce exercise-induced inflammation.

Toby Amidor, expert nutritionist told health website Healthy Way that “tart cherries in juice form do provide a great deal of nutrients including anthocyanins, a natural plant chemical found in tart cherries that is responsible for many of its health benefits.”

When looking for a cherry juice to buy at your local grocer, avoid juice that is made from concentrate and instead, opt for fresh cold-pressed juices or make your own.

Level Lemonade

The last thing you want when coming home from a great workout, is to throw all your hard work away by drinking an unhealthy soft drink like a sugary lemonade.

Level Beverages is an Australian company that have created a healthy alternative range of lemonades.

The lemonades are low in sugar, rich in Vitamin C and have the daily recommended intake of magnesium in just one drink.

They range in flavour from Original Lemonade, Lemonade and Orange and finally Lemonade and Pineapple.

More exciting than water but less dangerous than a calorie-filled soft drink, Level Lemonade is an easy way to get a much-needed post-workout boost of energy to conquer the rest of the day.

Alkaline Water

Aqualove have recently launched their newest product, Alkaline water which helps to balance out the alkaline/acidity levels of the body.

The natural pH level for the body should ideally range between 7.3pH – 7.45pH according to Mindbodygreen.

Alkaline water is a super-drink alternative to normal water as it aids in neutralising acidity in the body.

As well as this, it improves the overall immunity of the body, revitalising oxygen flow and increasing energy levels.

A hot green tea is the perfect finish to a sweaty gym session.

Lastly, green tea serves as a calming finish to a fiery workout.

It is high in antioxidants and catechins which aid in improving your body’s immunity and reducing muscle damage.

According to a study by The Journal of The International Society Of Sports and Nutrition, green tea works to metabolise fat so it’s as if your body is still putting in the work even after you’ve come back from the gym.

Expert nutrition researcher, Kris Gunnars wrote for Healthline stating that “green tea extract has been repeatedly linked to increased fat burning, especially during exercise.”

Get the best of both worlds by having a cup of hot green tea before and after you hit the gym to receive all the health benefits.
