How to Be Happy in Life

how to be happier in life

We chat to Inspiration writer and author on ways to be happier in life.

Dominique Bertolucci, life coach and inspirational author and writer released her new book ‘100 Days Happier; Daily Inspiration for Life-Long Happiness’ discusses ways in which we can all find happiness without our daily life.

Making healthy choices is one of the key ways we tell our subconscious that we value ourselves, that we are important and that we deserve a long and healthy life.

What is true happiness and why do we find it so hard to find it?

“Most people are looking for happiness in all the wrong places. They think they’ll be happy when they’ve done this or they’ve got that. They hope that a relationship will make them happy,  that being a certain size or having more money will, or they expect their job or their children to make them happy.

But happiness is a state of being, not one of doing or having. You will find real and lasting happiness when you live your life in alignment with your values, focussing on the things that matter most to you.”

Do you think it is tougher for women to find happiness?

“Perfectionism is a particularly common trait in women and yet the desire to be prefect is something that is in direct conflict with your ability to be happy. Perfection is an unachievable goal – you will never get there.

Instead of trying to be perfect women need to focus on simply being the best they can be and remind themselves that their best will always be good enough.”

Are there some people destined not to find it? And is happiness genetically imprinted on us ( i.e. are some people more likely to be happier than others)?

“Whilst your personality, family background and cultural influences may all have an impact on how happy you have been in the past, anyone can learn to the principles of happiness and by applying these principles will be able to experience an abundance of in the  future.”

Do you believe the healthier we are (via nutrition and fitness) the greater our chance of happiness – how are the two inter-related?

Making healthy choices is one of the key ways we tell our subconscious that we value ourselves, that we are important and that we deserve a long and healthy life.

When you are feeling unhappy these beliefs often get forgotten which is why unhealthy people are often unhappy and vice versa.”

What are the main factors that contribute to happiness (time with friends, travel etc)?

“In coaching we have something called the wheel of life and to be happy and fulfilled you want to have a wheel that is full and robust across all areas including: family, friends, romantic relationship, health and wellbeing, work and career, finance and money, personal development, and fun and recreation.

Everyone is different and so will chose different things that they want from each of these life areas”.  You can download a copy of the wheel of life here.

Are there things we can do on a daily basis to increase our happiness?

“My latest book, 100 Days Happier: daily inspiration for life-long happiness,  is all about the little things you can do each day that will leave you feeling happier about who you are and the life you live.

It is filled with simple suggestions like, ‘start each day expecting nothing but good things to come your way’, ‘perfectionism is a lost cause, focus your energy on being the best you can be’ and ‘make the time each day to count your blessings, chances are, your life is already rich in many ways’ and short explanations of exactly what you need to do to put these ideas into action.”

Are there things to avoid if we want to be happy?

“One of the most important things you can do if you want to be happy is be clear that the choices you are making in your day-to-day life ultimately support, not undermine your desire for happiness.

All to often people find themselves consciously or unconsciously compromising their chances at happiness by choosing to do things that actively get in its way.”

Why did you write your book and how do you intend people use it?

“When I wrote The Happiness Code: Ten keys to being the best you can be, I wanted to explain to people the how of happiness: the principles you need to adopt to make happiness a way of life.

This book takes those principles and shows you how to apply them in your life by making small daily changes in the way you think and act, changes that will ultimately create a fundamental shift in the way you feel about who you are and the life you are living.

You could sit down and read 100 Days Happier from cover to cover, but if you really want to be happy, choose one page each day and put that idea into action. It doesn’t matter if you do this in sequence or choose a random page each day. What matters is that you do it, and keep doing it, until the actions described become second nature to you.”
