5 Free Apps to Beat Boredom Right Now

Fancy a distraction to beat the boredom on your commute?

These apps will make commuting waaay less boring.

The average person in Australia spends about 52 minutes a day commuting to work and school.

And thanks to smartphones, there are plenty of apps to keep you entertained.

But instead of playing games, why not try one of these free apps to help keep your mind more productive.

Here are our top 5:

Side Chef

Side Chef makes dinner so much easier.

This is a great app when you’re travelling home at the end of the day, especially if you’re looking for dinner inspiration. Side Chef allows you to discover recipes based on dietary needs or cuisine preferences.

There is also a function that allows you to save your fave recipes to a digital cookbook. Don’t worry if your culinary skills aren’t at MasterChef level, each recipe even comes with an instructional video that has your back when you’re cooking.

Pocket

Pocket can be used across all smart devices.

Catching up on the daily news whilst commuting is a given. Pocket helps streamline the whole news experience for you by helping you sift through large quantities of news articles and videos you’re actually interested in and then saving them for you to read.

Plus, you don’t need an internet connection to access all the saved articles and stories. Perfect for those ‘zzz’ moments on the train, when the signal drops out.

Sporcle

Sporcle loves trivia time.

Everyone loves a good trivia night, right? Well, now you get to enjoy a good trivia game without all the sights and sounds of your local pub. Sporcle has thousands of great quizzes to help keep you entertained on your commute, and you might even learn something useful along the way.

There’s a trivia quiz for any flavour, from sports to movies, television and geography. These quizzes are great in the morning, as they help wake your brain up naturally, making you ready to face whatever the day throws at you.

Spotify

Mix up your favourite tracks with Spotify.

Of course, if you prefer to just kick back, relax and enjoy a few great tunes, then you can’t go past the Spotify app. It’s been around for a few years now, but there’s no denying it’s one of the best apps around for helping you choose a great playlist depending on your mood.

This is a free app, but a premium subscription for approx. $10 month is also available, which gives you more flexibility on music choices. If you aren’t digging ads, then you might find yourself purchasing the full subscription, as it’s ad free, and TBH, it’s so worth it.

Duolingo

Learn Japanese, whilst brushing up on your French on Duolingo.

This is a great new app that promises to help you learn new words in another language or brush up on one you may already know. The app is a fun way to explore different languages through fun games.

Duolingo currently supports 19 different languages and allows the user to set specific goals from five minutes of practice per day to 20. The further along you progress with the language, the more features get unlocked to help you improve further.
