Love Yourself – or at least be friends.

We invest so much time, energy and thought into the relationships we build with others, often neglecting to build a relationship with ourselves.

Loving yourself and being with yourself can be one of the most enriching experiences in life.

Having a healthy relationship with our minds and bodies will ensure a greater connection with the world and the people in it.

Here are a few ways to build on the relationship you have with yourself.

Be kind to yourself – Let your body take time out and don’t ask too much of it.

Living without challenge would be pointless because we would have no reason to grow. Challenging and pushing ourselves is how we develop a sense of self, however we also need to take the time to consider our minds and bodies and be kind to ourselves.

It’s vital to rest our body and mind in order to function at our full potential. Our bodies need the time to breath, rest and recover.

You will find that by taking down time your sense of self will become more apparent and you will find it easier to focus on the present because you are centered and balanced.

Chiropractor and Kinesiologist Aaron Roughan believes that concentrated breathing exercises can be a great way to “center our mind, which, in turn will help center our brain and body through our parasympathetic nerve system”.

Aaron recommends practicing yoga because it is structured around the breath and spirit.

Eat the right food – You are what you eat.

Being friends with your body really means just treating it with respect and care – putting energy and love in so you get the same back.

We all want our bodies to function at their peak, healthy and fit, but this will only be achieved if we fuel it with the right stuff.

A well balanced diet with loads of fresh fruit and vegetables, grains and high protein, low fat meats is what your body needs. If you are someone who suffers from a deficiency or allergy, ensure you are diligent about eating the right foods and taking the correct supplements to meet your body’s demands.

Exercise.

Exercise is something no one should go without. It’s what keeps our bones, brains, hearts and muscles strong. Going for a run can clear your mind while lifting weights can build your muscles, and has a plethora of other benefits. If you have trouble finding time to exercise, you need to look harder. It’s not something that should be overlooked because exercising is simply loving and caring for your body.

Cassie Mendoza, naturopath, herbalist, nutritionist and entrepreneur believes, “exercise is crucial to forming new pathways in our brains” and should therefore be seen as something we love doing as opposed to a chore.

Cassie reinforces the benefits of exercise to decrease stress levels. According to Cassie stress is crucial to our survival because it is a challenge, a call to our body to adapt so we can cope, “exercising will improve your body’s stress adaption system”.

Spoil and treat your body – Reward yourself.

Spoiling other people is an amazing feeling, so why not spoil yourself? A lot of people find it hard to treat themselves or do something nice for themselves. If you need a push in the right direction, here are a few suggestions;

Spa visit – Whether it’s the type of thing you’re into or not, booking a spa treatment is something super special to treat yourself to. Have a massage and a facial and enjoy the luxury of it all.

Weekend away – With your self, your partner or friends, book a weekend away somewhere you love to go or would love to go. The beach, farm, yoga retreat or the snow, spend a couple of days doing what you want and feel like doing.

Retail therapy – A lot of women wont argue with this one. Treat yourself to a little bit of retail therapy and buy yourself a new outfit. Feel good about your purchases and reward yourself with that luxury item you’ve been obsessing over, after all, you’re worth it.
