From The Editor: Facebook And LinkedIn Are Not Dating Sites

Please DON’T try and date me (or anyone else) via Facebook or LinkedIn.

It should be pretty obvious; dating sites are for dating, business sites are for business and friendship sites are for…yep, friendship. Sounds simple, right? If only it actually was.

Too many people have it all confused, and use all sites for all reasons. And way too many guys are using Facebook, LinkedIn and even Instagram to try and meet and date women.

It’s just not cool. A lot of women I speak to are going off social media all together for this reason – they’re over it.

It’s tough enough they say to get on an actual dating site and put yourself out there. And I agree. Let alone girls who are in committed relationships. It can cause problems.

I know I am about to sound old, but there once was a time when we were told never to talk to strangers. But my, what a difference a decade makes.

Thanks  to the wonderment of social media,  we have re-written the entire rule book for social interaction. We not only talk to strangers, we meet up with them, get in their cars and go on dates after merely meeting them online where they are, really, strangers.

Of course there are a plethora of precautions and rules to consider when dating online. But no-one should have to consider these when on sites that are not about dating or hook-ups or any of that.

So what can we do about it? The best thing is not to respond or interact with anyone misbehaving online. That takes the energy and excitement out of it for them. Let them find someone else who will.

Blocking strangers hassling you is something you can consider too.

And if you are in a relationship, change your status on Facebook to send a clear message, and consider putting a photo of the two of you on your instagram.

I know friends who have put a line on their LinkedIn profile saying they will not respond to any romantic advances on that site, which seems to work too.

If it all gets too much, you can always remove the app (Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram) from your phone so you are not regularly reminded of messages coming in. It’s an easy way to take the pressure off.
