Eggs are in fact a super food.

With the help of strategic superfood marketing, the world has gone kale, quinoa and acai crazy. Whilst you’ve been struggling to find (and pronounce the names of) these highly priced, sought-after superfoods, you’ve probably been eating superfoods unknowingly.

A lot of our every day groceries can contain the same, if not more, nutritional benefit than these trendy items.

Hint: you’ve almost certainly got them in your cupboards already.

  1. Garlic – Nature’s anti-inflammatory powerhouse

The Journal of Nutrition found the more you eat the lower your risk of stomach cancer. Lee Holmes, Sydney-based Holistic Nutritionist, explains:

“Fresh garlic is always the best choice if you are seeking its anti-bacterial or anti-viral qualities and it can be a good alternative to antibiotics.” It’s also shown to help lower LDL-cholesterol and lower high blood pressure.

2. Rooting for Ginger

The humble ginger is hardly a new kid on the superfood block. Used for centuries as a medicinal aid, today it’s used to ease indigestion, bloating and morning sickness. It can also help reduce pain and inflammation.

3. Turmeric – The Golden Child of Superfoods

Turmeric has been used in Chinese and Indian medicine for years, but why is it good for us, we hear you ask? Well, where do we start? Turmeric offers antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and even anti-carcinogenic properties. It can reduce bloating, aid digestion, and reduce the accumulation of toxins and harmful bacteria in the gut, lowering the risk of bowel cancers.

4. Onions – The Forgotten Superfood

Time to stock up on the mints. Onions contain quercetin, a powerful flavanoid and antioxidant which protect cells from free radical damage.

5. Eggs

Holmes explains: “An egg is a compact package of nutrition which provides every vitamin except vitamin C and a host of essential minerals as well as vitamin B12 and folate. Eggs are also a rich source of vitamin K.”

6. Popeye’s Food of Choice – Spinach

Spinach contains lots of phytonutrients and antioxidants including vitamins K, C and E, folate, iron and carotenoids.

7. Wild salmon

Salmon is high in protein and omega-3 fats – excellent for adding years to your life (and years off your face). This makes it the ultimate anti-ageing nutrient, explains Holmes. Wild salmon contains lots of vitamin D and selenium for naturally beautiful hair, skin, nails and healthy bones.
