Workouts to Match Your Mood

We all have those days when we don’t feel like getting off the couch. These are workouts to match your mood, to ensure you don’t miss out on your fitness fix no matter how you are feeling.

Most Sydneysiders are exercise junkies and conscious of the health benefits of it including weight loss, mood, sleep quality and even sex.

Exercise is beneficial on so many levels. The link between exercise and mood is evident with Boston University based Psychologist Michael Otto stating, “usually within five minutes after moderate exercise THERE IS a mood-enhancement effect.”

Mood: In Love

Workout: Pilates

Pelvic curls, single leg stretches, roll ups and more will encourage anyone to breath in and exhale calm, loving thoughts. Lean into the best warrior I, II and III ever executed when you are in the early stages of love, fueled by oxytocin.

Reformer or other. Try it when you are feeling in love.

Mood: Stressed

Workout: Mindfulness Meditation

A workout for the mind, mindfulness meditation is great when feeling stressed because it often helps to slow down racing thoughts and puts things in perspective. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care mindfulness coach Christine O’Shaughnessy says, “Doing mindfulness is like a fitness routine for your brain, It keeps the brain healthy.”

Relax into Yin Yoga.

Mood: Lethargic

Workout: Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga will do the trick after a long day or if getting out of bed is a challenge. Slower than most other forms of yoga, Yin feels like taking a rejuvenating nap as it stretches the deep connective tissue between muscles and the fascia.

Mood: Sad

Workout: Move your body and see a sunrise or sunset

Sadness affects everyone differently. when feeling sad walking to see a sunrise or sunset can remind us we are part of a bigger picture (as cliché as that may sound). Walk to a local vantage point and experience nature’s twice daily show.

Mood: Energised

Workout: HIIT or running

Run.

Workout: Speed walking

Exercising is one of the best cures for laziness. Speed walking is ideal when feeling lazy as it is a gentler form of exercise. Try a walk around the block or further to get the body moving.

Mood: Angry

Workout: Boxing

Release tension and anger with boxing. Whether you pretend the boxing bag is your ex-boyfriend or you simply focus on your technique, boxing is known for being one of the most physical, non-contact sports.

Match your exercise to your mood to get your body moving every day and feel the supercharging effects of endorphins making you feel generally happier.
