The Fitness You’ll be Doing in 2019

A worldwide survey has revealed the fitness trends you will be doing in 2019.

The survey of more than 2000 fitness professionals has revealed the top fitness trends for 2019, with wearable technology taking out the number one spot.

Conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), personal trainers, health fitness specialists, medical professionals and professors analysed the trends that they believed would be taking the fitness world by storm in 2019.

  1. Wearable technology, such as fitness trackers, smart watches and heart rate monitors are predicted to be the number one trend in 2019.

Wearable technology has been in the survey’s top 3 trends every year since 2016, but it’s return to the top spot can be seen as a result of “manufacturers correcting some monitoring inaccuracies of the past”, said Dr. Walter Thompson, the past-president of ACSM, who analysed the survey results.

2. Group Training was defined as a fitness class led by an exercise instructor with more than five participants.

These are “designed to be effective, motivational sessions… with instructors having leadership techniques that help individuals achieve fitness goals.” Think classes like Barry’s Bootcamp, F45 and Barre Body.

3. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) lost its 2018 top spot

Described as work at 90% of maximum intensity, followed by short rest periods, for anywhere between seven to 20 minutes per session, HIIT has been proven as a quick way to burn fat and calories long after you finish working out, says CrossFit Trainer and author of the 28-Day Fat Torch Guide Hannah Eden.

4. Fitness Programs for Older Adults

Catering to the older market, which has “more discretionary money than their younger counterparts”, this trend is expected to happen because people are living and remaining active for much longer.

5. Bodyweight Training

Bodyweight training uses minimal equipment, which will see its popularity increase in 2019 as it is an “inexpensive functional way to exercise effectively.”

Celebrities such as Margot Robbie, Miranda Kerr and Emilia Clarke all credit bodyweight and resistance training to their amazing physiques, and it’s something you can even do at home using YouTube for free.

6. Employing certified fitness professionals with the importance of hiring those who are accredited through educational and certification programs, this trend will be at an all-time high.

7. Yoga maintained its seventh spot.

With more varieties of yoga available than ever before, including Bikram (Hot) yoga, Power yoga and Yogalates, this mindful practice is no fad and should remain a trend for many years to come. Here’s how to pick the perfect yoga class for you.

What’s on the out for 2019?

According to the survey, core training, circuit weight training and sport-specific training are all on the way out, with all three failing to make the top 20 compared to last year’s survey.

Trends that were predicted for 2019 but didn’t make the cut included boot-camp style training, virtual/online training, Pilates, dance-based workouts and boutique fitness studios.
