The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) – the world’s largest sports medicine and exercise science organisation – has published its annual fitness trend forecast.

Wearable devices provide immediate feedback and can motivate the user to achieve their fitness goals by tracking progress. Technology is now paramount to our daily lives and can change the way we carry out our workouts.

Body weight training
No longer will you need to feel anxious about having to purchase a pricey membership and hit those weights at the gym in the New Year. Body weight training is free, versatile and can be done anywhere – the only equipment you need for 2016 is your body.
Includes: planks, squats, lunges, push ups and roll outs.
High-intensity interval training (HIIT)
Determined to get fit in the New Year but worried your schedule leaves you short on time? Then HIIT is for you. A guaranteed method for achieving a sweat-drenching workout in a short period of time – it consists of short bursts of activity followed by short periods of recovery, usually for up to 30 minutes.
Includes: sprinting, cycling or repetitions of jumping jacks and squats.
No – this will not make you “too bulky.” Strength training requires resistance in order to build muscle and anaerobic endurance. If your resolutions in 2016 are to burn fat, tone muscles and build strength, then this is an absolute must for your fitness diary next year.
Includes: free weights, medicine balls, resistance bands and weighted vests.
Educated and experienced fitness professionals
If these predictions are anything to go by, we will all be treating ourselves to a personal trainer, nutritionist or wellness coach in 2016.
Includes: Personal trainers, nutritionists, osteopaths
