Extra kilos? Here’s how to drop the weight:

Carrying an extra few kilos and not feeling in peak condition? Don’t get down about it, step up and lose the weight before it gets comfy on your body.

Don’t get down about your weight gain. Do something instead.

First things first – it’s usually not as bad as you think. You may feel like you have put on 5 kilos, but it’s probably more like 2-3 kilos. You probably only put it on because you were out of your usual food and fitness routine. A return to your healthier habits and you will start to look and feel like your fabulous self in no time.

Of course eating lots of fatty and sugary foods – or just more food, makes you squidgy around the edges. But crappy food makes you feel crappier and therefore fatter than you actually are. A few days of eating lean protein and vegetables is like a whole body detox. Once your digestion system is working properly, you will start feeling healthy again.

It’s a double whammy if you have missed a few workouts as well. Now you feel soft and unfit. Just a couple of workouts can get you feeling fitter, stronger and firmer because let’s face it, you didn’t lose all the gains of months of training in a couple of lazy weeks – it just feels like you did.

The important thing now is to nip it in the bud and not let a lazy few weeks become a lazy few months – and 2-3 kilos become 10 kilos. Commit to one action every day that will get you back on track. It may be passing on a glass of wine, skipping dessert, adding a walk. Just do something to get started again – and lose the extra weight.

Even a couple of kilos can make a difference to how some clothes fit. Trying on your favourite skinny pants or slinky dress every day and analysing your muffin top or round belly is demoralising and an unnecessary hit to your self-esteem. Pop them to the back of the cupboard for a couple of weeks while you rediscover your healthy lifestyle. Then enjoy putting them back on.

A little app help can go a long way. Replace a relaxing glass of wine and nibbles with 10 minutes of a meditation or yoga app. Organise and monitor food intake with a nutrition or meal plan app. Search for a new fitness app to add new life to old workouts. It’s time to get back on the health and fitness horse.
