Five ways to feel confident in the weights room

Five ways to kick your strength goals and feel more confident in the weights room.

A unisex gym can be an intimidating place when starting out on a health and fitness journey.

Dumbbells, barbells, squat racks, heavy plates; it’s a minefield of new equipment and new techniques. Not to mention the potential over-crowding and stares of other people.

The benefits of strength training are well known,  and celebrities such as Khloe Kardashian, Kate Upton and Victoria Secret Angel’s Adriana Lima and Martha Hunt all credit lifting weights to their amazing physiques.

Here are some top tips to feeling confident in the weights room.

  1. Talk to a personal trainer or a gym staff member

If you don’t know your squats from your deadlifts, ask the staff members at the gym for a quick consultation. Most will be more than happy to show you around the weights room and how to use the different machines. Personal trainers are also great for that little bit of a kick when it comes to motivation or setting a personalised plan.

  1. Research, Research, Research

Instagram is about to become your new best friend. Follow some gym pages, save workouts that you like and write up a plan before you enter the gym. Having videos to refer back to is a great way to ensure your technique is on point, while also guaranteeing you won’t be standing around for excess time wondering what to do.

  1. Take a friend

Having a workout buddy for support can make a massive difference, especially if it’s your first-time using weights. Partner up with supersets; two exercises you both do, one at a time, before swapping over.

  1. Pick a cute outfit

Working out doesn’t mean you have to look drab. Wearing cute activewear can make all the difference when it comes to feeling confident in the gym. It’s a mantra that Khloe Kardashian swears by, saying, “When I look good in the gym, I’m inspired to do an extra squat or lunge.” She even adds hoop earrings to her activewear ensemble.

  1. Music on, world out

Having your earphones in is a sure-fire way to let people know you don’t want to be bothered. Music is a great way to zone out and get you in the mood to get through the heavy sets, and all you have to do is focus on the beats and ignore the people around you.

Follow a gym playlist on Spotify or create your own with bangers that will motivate you and get your heart racing.

Zoe is a self-confessed health and fitness fanatic. She loves working out and being active, almost as much as she loves going out for brunch and eating avo toast. If she’s not in the gym, you’ll usually find her online shopping, buying something she definitely does not need, or updating her Pinterest board with travel and adventure ideas for the future. Her other loves include dark chocolate, coffee and cats, all enjoyed while watching bad (or really good?) reality TV
