Fitness First’s Daniel Macpherson: “Somehow I feel it couldn’t have been co-incidence. The universe pushed me to a sequence of events which led to me becoming an actor. It sounds far-fetched, almost too far-fetched to be true, but that’s often the case with real life – the truth is hard to believe.”. Photo by Roxy Lee.

At 34, Aussie Actor and former Neighbours star Daniel Macpherson looks better and fitter than ever.

The former Cronulla boy is living in LA, with long term girlfriend Zoe Ventoura, and says sport is still his first love.Hard to believe but he claims he was “the fat kid at school”, and it was sport, namely triathlon that not only led him to dramatic weight loss but also to his acting career.

The presenter is also known for his acting roles in the UK TV series The Bill, as well as City Homicide and Wild Boys.

Spiritually, he believes in the power of the universe, and his mantra is focussed on keeping fit for life. Here in Australia he’s the face of Fitness First, and credits the company with helping him maintain his fitness when travelling around the  world.

But triathlon was where his passion for sport was ignited. “I was about 11 years old when I first raced a triathlon as a junior in Sydney,” he recalls.

“I came 33rd out of 42, but I stuck with it, joined a triathlon club and fell in love with the sport. I trained hard and loved the way my body changed.

I became addicted to the training as well as competing. ” Macpherson says he has learnt far more about life and about himself from triathlon than anticipated. “ I became addicted to the discipline of it.”

“I learnt that you get out of the sport what you put into it, and I quickly learnt that translated into all aspects of my life.” Something he never anticipated was meeting an acting agent at a triathlon event, who changed his path in life forever. “I was volunteering at a triathlon at Kurnell as I couldn’t compete due to illness.”

“I learnt that you get out of the sport what you put into it, and I quickly learnt that translated into all aspects of my life.”

“The way life can change is an amazing thing. An agent approached me and asked me if I was interested in an acting career. Two weeks later my parents were contacted, a meeting was arranged and I was auditioning for a role on Neighbours as a tri-athlete.”

Macpherson landed the role, and at 18 years of age, his acting career was born. “Somehow I feel it couldn’t have been co-incidence. The universe pushed me to a sequence of events which led to me becoming an actor. It sounds far-fetched, almost too far-fetched to be true, but that’s often the case with real life – the truth is hard to believe.”

Not withstanding the success of his acting career, fitness has always been a priority for him, and triathlon is in his blood. “I took breaks and focussed on acting at times but I always trained, even when I wasn’t competing. When in London, I ran the London marathon, and in 2000 I came back to triathlon seriously and decided to train for an iron man.

My first iron man was in WA in 2006.” Macpherson completed 5 iron mans in 4 years whilst hosting Dancing With The Stars, each included a 3.86 km swim, 180.25 bike, and a 42.2 km run. He has even completed in an Ironman in Kona, Hawaii,  the world’s most iconic place to compete in a triathlon.

Daniel says he has “unfinished business” in Kona, and hopes to return, and meanwhile continues his punishing training schedule fitting in races inbetween acting gigs in LA.
