Celebrate World Vegan Day, 1 November with these amazing and delicious Bondi plant-based eateries

In previous years, being vegan and eating out was a challenge; with little to no restaurants offering food that was completely meat-free. Now, Sydney is having a vegan moment, and Bondi is at the heart of it.

There’s just something about Bondi that screams ‘distinctly vegan’; from the focus on a healthy, outdoors lifestyle, to the range of cafes and restaurants that utilise sustainable foods and practices, to the war on waste and plastic that is plaguing the world.

The benefits of veganism are well known, and to celebrate World Vegan Day on the 1st November, here’s a rundown on some of Bondi’s best vegan eateries. These places not only produce amazing plant-based food, but they look amazing on social media feeds, thanks to fresh, colourful ingredients and interiors that focus on pops of greenery and pastels, destined to make friends food-jealous.

Peppes, Bondi Road

Located on bustling Bondi Road, this hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant is only 40 square feet, but don’t let the small size scare you off.

Focusing on pasta and gnocchi, which is made fresh on site every day, everything on this menu is vegan (even the wine), with produce local and sustainably sourced.

A revolving blackboard menu of 12 pasta dishes, paired with eight different wines, Peppes prides itself on simple, yet flavoursome meals. Except aromas of green pea pesto, signature pomodoro and gnocchi bianchi, served with cauliflower puree and a porcini stock reduction.

And the food is in good hands – with previous vegan degustation chef Joel Bennetts taking the reins, who trained under Pier Rose Bay’s renowned chef Grant King.

Owned by vegan restaurateurs Joe Pagliaro and Grace Watson, who also own vegan fine diner Paperbark in Waterloo, the emphasis on the interior was in creating a homely, relaxed atmosphere. Timber and exposed brick provides an industrial feel, with seating around two communal tables or at the bar.

Head here every Monday for live jazz and blues music for mellow tunes over a delicious Italian feast.

Peppe’s, 261 Bondi Road, Bondi. Open for dinner Wednesday – Monday 5:00pm-9:30pm

Eden Bondi, Campbell Parade

Overlooking the beautiful Bondi Beach, Eden Bondi is an 80-seater entirely plant-based eatery, offering a range of pizzas, burgers, bowls and salads.

Recently opened in August 2019, Eden is the result of a rebranding from popular Bondi vegan eatery, Conscious Feast. With a beautiful courtyard location that focuses on greenery and colour, indoor and outdoor seating is available at this licensed restaurant.

For something different and spicy, try the Captain Jack Pizza, featuring pulled BBQ jackfruit, black beans, pickled jalapenos and chilli mayo. The Watermelon Poke served on house-made nori crackers is refreshing and cleansing on the palette, while you won’t even notice the chicken missing from the Popcorn Cauliflower.
