Australia Day: Here’s What’s Happening in Sydney

Looking for fun ways to spend your long weekend this Australia Day with family and friends?

From open air cinemas, to chilling at the beach, there’s a lot happening in Sydney this weekend. Here are some of our favourites:

Outdoor Cinema – Bondi

From January 19th to March 4th, American Express are hosting the open-air cinemas at Bondi. Overlooking one of Australia’s most iconic beaches, the festival vibes will be in full swing each night, with an array of alternative entertainment, live music, and DJ performances, before moving on to airing some of the latest and greatest feature films.

Relaxing at the Beach – Bondi

If you’re on a budget and looking for some downtime, head to Bondi and spend a day relaxing on the beach. Bondi will be hosting a mixed variety of activities on Australia Day and the over the whole long-weekend. Including markets and live music. So, grab the sunscreen and your bestie and head down to Bondi for some much needed R&R and salty air – which is always good for the soul.

Explore the Secret Garden – Paddington

Enjoy a stroll through the whimsical Secret Garden Exhibition in Paddington, where colourful canvases of a real Secret Garden are brought to life through the use of fantasy art of owls, dragons, mystical sea creatures and horses. This stunning display of artwork will channel the inner child of everyone, as you spend some a quiet moment reflecting and admiring each piece along the way.

Vegemite Waffles – Surry Hills

Australia Day is not Australia Day, if it doesn’t include vegemite. The Forresters Restaurant/Pub in Surry Hills are starting the party early and will continue celebration throughout the entire long-weekend. With a range of specials on offer from Thursday to Sunday, including $20 cocktails and an $8 sausage sizzle. But most of all, they will be serving up a very Australian Day lunch of toasted vegemite waffles – delicious.

Did someone say Lobster – Watsons Bay

Watsons Bay Hotel always put on a good show, no matter the celebration. And for Australia Day, there will be some amazing and delicious foods on offer, along with their resident DJ mixing up some awesome tracks to help you celebrate the long weekend. Their Lobster and Prawn Linguine is simply stunning – but make sure you leave room for desert, because their lemon myrtle cream and berry pavlova is to die for.

If you left it to last minute and don’t have time to gather a crew to head out to Bondi; or Sydney city, to enjoy the many festivities on offer, you can always play hostess and tell anyone who is free to head over to your joint for a BBQ and some lamingtons. Just don’t forget the vegemite.
