Why Exaggerated Eyeshadow Will Be Big This Year: Beauty Trends 2020

What do exaggerated eyeshadow, environmental beauty and technology have in common? They’re beauty trends that are set to be big in 2020.

As the calendar turns over to a new year, a new set of beauty trends are about to take over. 2020 is the year of experimentation, environmental consciousness and technological beauty.

From celebrities on the red carpet, to using selfies to improve a beauty routine – here’s what to expect in the first year of the new decade.

New Technology Beauty

Technology and beauty are set to combine in 2020, making our lives easier – and prettier – than ever before.

At the end of 2019, L’Oreal announced the launch of the new La Roche-Posay My Skin Track UV – a wearable electronic bracelet that measures UV exposure, pollution, pollen and humidity, for $89.95 AUD.

Once the sun hits the scanner, information is then sent to an app, where product recommendations can be made to best suit the individual. The sensor in the bracelet can even recognise once sunscreen is applied.

Another tech addition to the beauty world from L’Oreal is the L’Oreal Perso – an app and smart device that creates custom formulas for foundations, lipstick and skincare.

With the click of a camera, data can be collected identifying skin concerns such as dark circles or large pores, which is then collated alongside location data, bringing environmental concerns such as pollution and UV index.

From this, a custom formula is then generated in the devices three-ingredient cartridges, producing a single-use dose tailored directly to the user.

Skincare powerhouse Neutrogena also recently launched the Neutrogena Skin360 app that can scan and evaluate the skin’s health, all through a simple selfie.

Processing over 100,000 skin pixels from a selfie, five different aspects of skin health can be measured, with AI technology learning the skin over time. This allows for personalised routine and product recommendations, tailored directly to an individual’s skin concerns.

Exaggerated Eyeliner, Eyeshadow and Mascara

Gone are the days of shying away from the camera or standing behind the curtain. We’ve found our feet and realised that life is too short to please others or abide by traditional beauty standards – a new decade calls for new confidence.

Taking risks with beauty is going to be big in 2020, and be prepared to let the world know you’re there.

Bold looks have recently been seen on the runway, with high-fashion powerhouses such as Oscar De La Renta and Nicole Miller embracing multi-coloured eyeshadow in their 2020 Spring/Summer collections.

From different colours on the lashline, to even a completely different shade on either eye – don’t be afraid to mix up your eyeshadow and create a look that will be remembered.

US celebrity Shay Mitchell also demonstrates the eyeliner doesn’t have to be just restricted to the waterline. Her exaggerated eyeliner is on trend for 2020, with her eyeliner floating well above her eye and into the cut crease.

Don’t leave the eyelashes stuck in 2019 with simple black hues. Coloured mascara is in, and it can either enhance a powerful eyeshadow look to create a bold, unstoppable eye, or it can be used alongside a neutral base as a feature.

If the idea of ditching the trustworthy black lash makes you scream in fright, start with a green or blue mascara, as this won’t be as obvious. Work your way up to pink and yellow mascaras for a true pop of colour.

A Conscious Beauty

Climate change and environmental sustainability are at the forefront of almost the entire population’s minds, particularly when experts say the next decade is critical in reducing the impacts of climate change.

In 2020, expect this to also be applied to beauty, with people actively thinking about what products they are consuming.

From the impact on the environment, to the ingredients, now more so than ever is the realisation that we have the power to choose products that are good for us – and brands must follow suit.

According to Women’s Wear Daily, Blue Beauty will become “the next generation clean beauty”. Blue Beauty is a facet of the “green beauty” movement, which centres on the transparency of ingredients to ensure they benefit the environment – from the sourcing of ingredients to their manufacturing, packaging and recycling.

Through using reef safe ingredients and continuing to promote zero-waste packaging, blue beauty, however, especially focuses on ocean conservation.

Brands such as L’Oreal are helping this movement forward – the brand recently committed to 100 per cent eco-friendly packaging by 2025.

At the end of 2019, the consumption of water used in their products was significantly limited, at a 60 per cent reduction per product.

Bottles will be on the way out, too, so as to further reduce plastic. Think bars of everything – from soaps, to shampoos, to cleansers – everything is about to get naked.

Lush has always been at the forefront of package-free products, with the majority of their product line naked – meaning no excess plastic, waste or packaging houses the products.

Zoe is a self-confessed health and fitness fanatic. She loves working out and being active, almost as much as she loves going out for brunch and eating avo toast. If she’s not in the gym, you’ll usually find her online shopping, buying something she definitely does not need, or updating her Pinterest board with travel and adventure ideas for the future. Her other loves include dark chocolate, coffee and cats, all enjoyed while watching bad (or really good?) reality TV
