The Ultimate Makeup Routine For Extremely Sensitive Skin

Glowy skin goals

BB writer Tara Mckenzie has extremely sensitive skin and is unable to road test many products and brands.

She has spent 5 months road testing vegan, mineral and chemical-free products to bring you the products that work.

Our skin is our largest organ—adults carry around 3.6 kilograms and 2 square meters of it. So just as society emphasises taking care of the liver by avoiding toxins, it is important to prioritise natural products that go on the skin.

Mineral and chemical free makeup is a go-to for me, especially as someone who suffers from highly sensitive skin.

Given my skin’s sensitivities, I react very quickly to products that are too harsh or stripping – I’ve been known break out in a rash when products are too strong, and my eyes can swell up very quickly with the wrong products – so I’m careful to only use products that are natural and nourish my skin.

After many tests and trials, I’ve found my Ultimate Mineral Makeup Routine:

Foundation

Synergie Foundation
The Synergie Skin Mineral Whip Foundation

The The Synergie Skin, Mineral Whip Foundation (RRP $69.00) has been my sensitive skin saviour. The unique consistency of this foundation starts as a cream but dries somewhat like a powder, so you don’t have to set it.

It is also a mineral foundation, so I feel safer knowing that there are no harmful chemicals in it. What’s more it has an SPF coverage of 40+ which is perfect everyday foundation.

Bronzer

Bronzer
Macadamia Crush Bronzer by Raww Cosmetics

The Macadamia Crush Bronzer by Raww Cosmetics (RRP $29.99) is a recent addition to my mineral makeup kit. The bronzer is infused with oils such as macadamia, pomegranate and coconut to nourish the skin whilst also giving you a warm glow. I apply this bronzer to the high points of my face to give me a luminous sun kissed look.

Because of my naturally pale skin I usually steer clear of very warm toned bronzers as they can come out looking orange on me, however, this bronzer is the perfect balance and buildability. In terms of colour match, I would liken it as a great dupe for the Too Faced Chocolate Bronzer.

Eyeliner

Nude Eyeliner
Raww Cosmetics Babassu Oil Eye Pencil in Nutty Beige

Recently I have fallen back in love with nude eyeliner. Applying a white or beige eyeliner to your low rim is the perfect cheat for looking wide awake and bright eyed. The Raww Cosmetics Babassu Oil Eye Pencil in Nutty Beige (RRP $19.99) is my new obsession. As a certified organic cosmetic I feel comfortable putting it on my eye and leaving it there all day (because this bad boy stays in place ALL DAY). If you want to take your makeup from day to night, why not swap out Nutty Beige for Carbon Black for a more sultry look.

Mascara

Mascara
Eye of Horus Bio Lash Lift Mascara

Finding a good quality natural mascara can be difficult, however, like eyeliner, knowing that I’m not putting harsh chemicals on my eyes provides a great piece of mind.

Right now, I’m using the Eye of Horus Bio Lash Lift Mascara (RRP $40.00). This product is made from 98% natural origins and is certified vegan friendly. The wand on this mascara, however, is a bit finicky to use to start with. It is a very traditional comb style wand rather than a spoolie. While the negatives of this are that it takes longer to build up the product, the benefits are the lengthening and separating effects of a comb.

The formula is also long lasting and smudge proof so it’s a great everyday mascara for a more natural eyelash look.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen
Synergie Skin’s ÜberZinc (SPF 15 and PA+++)

Everyone knows the importance of protecting the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. It’s essential when preventing sun damage and fine lines. But if you have to wear sunscreen everyday, it’s important to choose a product that not only protects the skin from UV, but also contains no toxins or harsh chemicals.

Enter physical sunscreens; not only is Zinc Oxide a physical sunscreen which protects against UVA and UVB, it also ticks so many boxes for amping up skin health.

Synergie Skin’s ÜberZinc (SPF 15 and PA+++) (RRP $115) will protect from 93.3% of UVB rays, offering only 3.4% less protection from burning rays (UVB) than an SPF 30 sunscreen. It’s a luxe moisturiser with built-in UVA and UVB protection and is guaranteed to be safe for the skin! Win, win!
