The Perfect Date Night Lip Colour – We Promise

Deep reds, browns and pink lipsticks are the perfect look for the colder months, but date night should still be spicy.

As the months turn colder and the days shorter, adding warmth to a makeup look becomes more important than ever before.

Brightening up a pale face that might not be as sun-kissed as was in summer is easier with warm and deep tone lipsticks,  a must have this Autumn.

And if you know your mattes from your glosses, you know that no two red lipsticks are ever the same.

Here are our current favourite lipsticks for bringing the warmth.

Bobbi Brown Luxe Shine Lipstick in Supernova, RRP$56 AUD

Bobbi Brown lipstick
A burnt orange look is an easy way to bring warmth to a winter face

Colour: Somewhere between burnt orange, dark coral and a light maroon

Finish: Satin with a shine

Texture: Creamy

Ideal for: Date night

Smelling like an old-school musk stick lolly, this lipstick from Bobbi Brown packs a pigmented punch.

The shade Supernova is perfect for Autumn, the colour somewhere in between a deep burnt orange and a light maroon.

Unlike some other lipsticks, it isn’t tacky to apply, and in just a few swipes on the lips, an intense colour is easily built.

Additionally, the creamy texture is packed full of hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, so applying this felt almost like a lip balm that nourishes and soothes the lips.

And while I didn’t lock any lips while donning this hot colour, it did transfer onto glasses and straws while drinking, so your partner may be likely to gain a little colour after a smooch of this. Even after this, the colour continued to last for hours, only requiring the occasional touch up.

Designer Brands Moisturising Lipstick in Blush Mauve, RRP $11.99

Designer Brands lipstick
A satin finish means this lipstick won’t crack overtime.

Colour: Blush Mauve, a nude-pink that is natural looking

Finish: Satin

Texture: Creamy

Ideal for: Soft glam look or an everyday on-the-go lippy.

In shade Blush Mauve, this moisturising lipstick is a dainty nude-pink colour, ideal for a casual makeup look.

The creamy, soft texture of this makes it a dream to apply. The satin finish means this lipstick applies in between a matte and creamy look – giving a slight shine while still providing full colour, without drying out and cracking over time.

The nude colour is also a benefit, as over time (and after a few lip smacks and pouts), the colour blended seamlessly into my lips – meaning copious touch ups weren’t required to make this lipstick last. This lipstick would be ideal for any soft glam makeup look.

My lips were also left feeling soft and hydrated, thanks to the inclusion of Jojoba Seed Oil and Vitamin E & A, both helping to nourish and keep lips supple.

Napoleon Perdis Mattetastic Lipstick in Lauren, RRP $38 AUD

Colour: Natural brown

Finish: Matte

Texture: Buttery and smooth

Ideal for: Work boss vibes

Napoleon Perdis rich brown
A rich brown is a powerhouse move; wear this to stand out.

Upon opening this little black tube of lipstick from Napoleon Perdis, the rich brown colour was initially a little off putting, myself not used to donning such a dark colour.

But after applying, the brown instead turns to a deeper natural colour. It’s ideal for a dramatic look where your lips are not the centre point, but still want to be noticed.

With a buttery texture it feels smooth, my lips felt hydrated throughout the day. The lipstick has a matte finish, so this intense colour lasts. However,  several touch ups were needed to avoid that dreaded ‘crack’ that often accompanies a matte product.

Mary Grace High Shine Mineral Gloss in 02, RRP$20 AUD

Colour: Muted warm plum with a glow

Finish: Glossy Shine

Texture: Sticky

Ideal for: Everyday use

Mary Grace lipstick
An everyday high shine lip gloss with just a pop of colour

A high shine, tinted lip gloss is great for when access to a mirror isn’t on hand, because you can apply without needing to perfectly hit every inch of the cupid’s bow or outer edges of the lips.

The Mary Grace High Shine Mineral Gloss provides a tinted, natural looking shine to the lips. Infused with mineral oil and vitamin E, this lip gloss left my lips feeling soft and hydrated. The colour can also be built up for a deeper red shade for a more dramatic look, and it didn’t transfer onto glasses.

Like any lip gloss, the texture was a little sticky – if your hair was in the wind, this lip gloss would catch it.

Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon in Hawaiian Smoulder, RRP $16.95

Burt's Bees lipstick
A muted hot pink is an ideal warm colour for a soft look

Colour: A muted hot pink

Finish: Matte

Texture: Barely there with a slight creamy base

Ideal for: A day time date

Lip crayons feel so light on the lips, you’ll forget the product is even there. This Burt’s Bees lip crayon features a matte finish for an intense, long lasting colour.

While not as an easy glide as other lipsticks, this lip crayon required a few initial swipes before the colour can be fully seen – you literally have to colour in your lips for the colour to pop.

The pointed precision tip makes this easy, though, allowing you to apply the product in the small creases of the lips. Additionally, it doesn’t have to be sharpened like other crayons – making it ideal to throw into a handbag, worry free.

Further, this product didn’t transfer onto glasses as strong as others have, likely because the lip crayon design means less product is applied as you colour in your lips.

The muted hot pink shade, Hawaiian Smoulder, is also great if you’re someone like me, who often doesn’t feel bold enough to wear bright reds or warm brown tones. It’s a cute pink that doesn’t scream from the rooftops, ideal for a daytime look.
