The Best Makeup Brushes

the best makeup brushes to use

To find out which makeup brushes the Bondi Beauty team uses, read on for their essential brush guide.

Who here has never tried and probably never will ever use, a makeup brush? Be honest.

If you raised your hand, you’re most likely not alone. You’d be surprised how many women still don’t apply their makeup using brushes. Not so long ago, I was in fact, one of those women myself. And, so was BB founder Renae.

Like most of you, we both preferred a hands-on approach to applying makeup, especially foundation, to our face.

Until we found out the dirty little secrets of how much bacteria we carry on our hands, how much of that bacteria ends up in our makeup and then is transferred to the skin when applying said makeup – EWE right?

Of course, this doesn’t mean makeup brushes are any cleaner than your hands, especially if you don’t regularly clean your brushes enough to keep them bacteria free. However, every industry expert, beauty therapist and makeup artist all agree on one thing. Makeup brushes are a safer bet for applying makeup to the skin than using your hands.

The reason, because the bacteria resides on our hands is transferred to the makeup; especially foundation before application. Where when using a makeup brush, the only contact is between the makeup and the brush and then the brush on the skin – essentially you are bypassing your hands altogether.

Note: If you do have breakouts, you must always wash the brush before your next use, or any bacteria from the face will reside on the brush and be re-transferred to the face when using to reapply any makeup.

If any of this has changed your mind and you now want to convert to brushes, check out the BB team’s makeup brush guide below to help you choose which brush to get you started.

BB founder Renae Leith-Manos says:

“I’ve always used my hands to apply foundation but IT Cosmetics have recently converted me. They sent me their oil free foundation and brush and it has made applying the foundation quick and easy. The coverage is flawless, and my hands don’t get dirty. I also don’t pass germs from my fingers to my face, so less pimples. I have noticed that I use a lot more foundation using this method though as the brush absorbs it.”

BB Writer Zoe Bradbury says:

“I love Morphe brushes. They are both affordable at around $9 and of high quality. Though at first, I’ll admit, I was sceptical a $9 brush would be able to perform. I was pleasantly surprised. My favourite is the M156 Smudger and Oval Fluff brush. It’s a dual ended brush, which is like buying two for one, with one end being perfect for finer makeup details and the other for blending and smudging.”

Zoe also uses the M330 Blending Crease for blending out shades and colours RRP $9

BB Writer Maddison Langshaw says:

“I normally don’t wear a lot of makeup as I like to let my skin breath a lot, especially since I work out every morning and afternoon. I find it annoying to constantly remove and reapply makeup because of this. However, on special occasions when I am heading out I like to keep things real simple with my makeup and lean towards using the BYS brush range. Believe it or not, they are work really well in blending makeup and at $14 you really can’t beat that.”

Maddison uses the 5 BYS Keep Sake Brush Kit as there is a brush for applying highlighter, contour and powder RRP $14.

BB Writer Rebecca says:

“Like BB founder Renae, up until two years ago I applied all makeup using my hands. Until I went to an IT Cosmetics launch and fell in love with their #7 Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection dual edge brush. From there my brush obsession only grew and moved on to brands like Real Techniques. Though, I have recently fallen in love with the new 10 Piece Brush Set Melodrama by Designer Brands. The brushes are vegan and cruelty-free, perform perfectly and are super soft to touch.”

Rebecca uses the Foundation Buffing Brush from the Design Brands Kit RRP $29.99 (full kit), and the Complexion Blender Brush by Real Techniques RRP $30 (for the set which includes the buffing brush).
