Testing new foundations: How does Beauty Blender compare to Drew Barrymore’s Flower Beauty?

The amount of foundations currently available is almost endless, and there’s nothing more challenging than trying to find the right one, in the right colour, tone and consistency. And when the seasons change, many women have to start over.

From finding out that that $50 product actually looks chalky and thick after a few hours, to realising another doesn’t give enough coverage – it’s an endless battle, and one where people aren’t usually willing to deviate from their habitual purchase.

Bondi Beauty tested out six foundations, so you don’t have to – from some of the best brands, with different types including long wear, CC cream, mineral creams and natural foundations – here’s an honest guide to some new foundations.

Beauty Blender Bounce Liquid Whip Long Wear Foundation, RRP $60.00

Skin type: Normal, Dry, Combination

Coverage: Medium to full

Beauty Blender’s highly anticipated foundation Bounce does not disappoint. Beauty Blender’s award-winning foundation sponge is designed to be used while wet, and it’s unique teardrop shape helps blend any imperfections for a seamless finish.

Their first foray into foundation, Bounce, is a medium-to-full coverage foundation with a long-wear formula that leaves skin covered for up to 24 hours.

It has an incredibly light texture, “air whipped”, but yet it is still thick enough to cover imperfections, while not looking cakey or dry.

The finish, as described by the brand, is a “velveteen matte”, which is between a matte and dewy finish.

But one of the best features has to be the bottle design. It’s completely innovative and designed specifically for use with a beauty blender.

After unlocking the top – which is great for travelling as it won’t spill – the sponge is placed on a blender-shaped dish, where the foundation can be pumped directly onto the sponge.

If applied without a beauty blender, and with the fingers instead, the application is noticeably not as smooth and quite tacky. But once applied to a sponge, the coverage can be built up to the desired level easily.

Another bonus is that Bounce is available in 40 different shades, meaning it is inclusive for almost every skin type.

While this foundation is relatively expensive, its formula does leave skin looking smooth and imperfection free, while being very buildable to the desired texture.

Flower Beauty Light Illusion Liquid Foundation, RRP $13.99

Skin type: Normal, dry and combination

Coverage: Lightweight to buildable medium

Flower Beauty is the makeup company from Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore, that launched in Australia in January 2019.

Unlike other celebrity cosmetics line, Flower Beauty was designed to be affordable, with no products over $15 AUD. However, the low price doesn’t mean the products lack in quality.

Packaged in a somewhat heavy glass bottle that feels more expensive than the $14 price tag, this Light Illusion foundation provides a lightweight to medium coverage.

It is easily buildable to a flawless, smooth complexion, but does not leave a cakey finish, nor does it leave the skin looking dry.

With a dewy finish, this foundation is different from others as it looks as if it’s been mixed with drops of highlighter, giving the skin a natural glow and shine.

While this great for normal to dry skin types, for oily or shiny skin, it is probably not the best, as it will only increase this look.

As an added bonus, it also contains SPF 18, and according to the Flower Beauty website, comes in 15 shades.

For such an inexpensive product, this is impressive. It applies smoothly, coverage is sufficient and can be increased, and it also gives a natural glow that many foundations do not have.

OCosmedics Sk1n Natural Fusion Treatment Foundation, RRP $59.00

Lightweight foundation by OCosmedics available in seven shades
A lightweight natural foundation from OCosmedics

Skin type: All

Coverage: Lightweight

This is a natural-based foundation that is free of silicones and parabens, designed to hydrate and protect the skin.

A natural formula makes this foundation different from others.

Enhanced with desert date oil, this gives nourishing, hydrating and purifying benefits. Further, organic fruit extract is included to help fight environmental stressors and repair skin.

It is easily applied to the skin and it gives a natural, velvety look.

With only a lightweight finish, the coverage is not very high, and although it is buildable, it does not hide all imperfections like some other products do. For a thicker coverage, apply two plus coats.

Available in seven shades.

CoverFX Mineral Cream Foundation, RRP $59.00

Pressed mineral cream foundation by CoverFX
CoverFX Mineral Cream Foundation

Skin type: Normal to dry

Coverage: Sheer to medium to full

CoverFX Mineral Cream Foundation has many uses. It is a cream foundation and concealer in one compact, but it can also be used as a cream contour.

Its ultra-creamy formula is easily applied and blendable to desired coverage, and its long wear lasting. Additionally, it contains antioxidants such as Vitamin E and C, which helps to prevent skin against free radicals.

This foundation can be applied in a number of ways. For sheer to light, apply with a powder brush. For medium to full coverage, a sponge applicator is included in the product.

Due to the cream formula, it can be difficult to get a full coverage, particularly with the small compact. Instead, it may be more beneficial to use as additional coverage to another foundation.

Available in 40 global shades.

Peter Thomas Roth Skin to Die for Mineral Matte CC Cream, RRP $54.00

Peter Thomas Roth, CC Cream, BB cream
Peter Thomas Roth Skin to die for Matte CC Cream

Skin type: All

Coverage: Light to medium

This mineral matte CC cream from Peter Thomas Roth helps minimize imperfections to leave skin looking younger, smoother and more evenly toned.

While not a foundation, this still provides a medium coverage and is great as a base. While it is on the thicker side, it still applies relatively easy. The finish is radiant and not matte, with a maximum medium coverage, which is expected from a CC cream.

Containing SPF 30 and THD Ascorbate, a potent ingredient 50X more powerful than vitamin C, this is a product that is primarily designed to protect, hydrate and overall, better skin. It’s also chemical and fragrance free, which is beneficial for sensitive skin types.

While some coverage does remain, for full effect, the brand suggests reapplying every two hours to ensure proper sun protection.

Unfortunately, it is only available in three shades, which means it isn’t inclusive for all skin shades. For now, it is available in light, medium and tan, and it is great for skin over 35 years.

Having good foundation doesn’t happen without the right tools. Here’s how to clean makeup brushes when they’re looking worse for wear.
