Soft Lips For Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner it’s time to pull out all the stops so you feel your most beautiful in front of your very special Valentine.

You probably have a sexy date-night outfit planned, paired with the perfect sultry makeup look to match but what you may not have considered is how kissable your lips are.

There is absolutely nothing worse than sharing a romantic moment with someone, thinking you are about to have a magical kiss, and then being met with crusty, cracked lips.

We know constant exposure to the sun can cause chapped lips, and whilst we want you to feel kiss-ready for your special day, we are also not going to forbid you from hitting up the beach and soaking up that summer sun.

Here is the perfect lip care routine to prep your lips for the ultimate Valentine’s Day kiss.

Step 1:  Exfoliate

To rid of all the dry flakey bits of skin on your lips, exfoliation is key.

Lip scrubs are an easy way to exfoliate your lips.

You will want to gentle massage the scrub onto your top and bottom lips so that every little bit of dry skin comes off.

Some of our favourites include Lush’s bright pink Bubblegum Lip Scrub made of castor sugar and jojoba oil and Burt’s Bee’s soothing Natural Conditioning Lip Scrub.

You can easily DIY your own lip scrub at home as they usually contain just two components – an exfoliant and a nourishing oil.

Another cheap way to get the job done is by using an old toothbrush and in circular motions running the bristles over your lips until all the dead skin comes off revealing a soft layer underneath.

This also has a plumping effect and is a great way to prep your lips before putting on lipstick or lip gloss.

Step 2: Moisturise

Hydrating your lips regularly is the best way to maintain its soft supple nature.

Use an ultra-nourishing lip balm that works to lock in hydration.

It is especially beneficial if your lip balm contains SPF 30+ as lips are usually one of the first places where sun damage is noticeable.

Some of our top lip moisturising products include Kiehl’s relieving Lip Balm and the super softening Clean and Pure Cocoa Butter Lip Balm.

Another simple way to keep your lips hydrated is to keep drinking water.

If you have ever had chapped lips and your instinct is to lick them, do not.

According to Healthline, although the saliva will briefly add moisture to dry lips, it quickly evaporates and dries out your lips faster than before.

Step 3: Add Life to Your Lips!

Whether it’s lipstick, lip gloss, lip tint or lip liner, have fun with how you choose to present your lips.

Experiment with a deep red or a bold pink to tie into the Valentine’s Day theme.

Here are our teams other favourite lip products of all time:

Vaseline Lip Therapy Lip Balm

“With the change in season, my lips are constantly chapped. That’s why I never hesitate to reach for my Vaseline Lip Therapy Lip Balm to soothe my dry lips.

A quick application several times throughout the day leaves my lips feeling moisturised and soft. For an added tint of colour I sometimes opt for the Rosy Lips shade of the Vaseline Lip Therapy Lip Balm.”  – BB Writer Anisha Rapthi

RRP: $4.99

Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution The True Red Lipstick

“I am loving Charlotte Tilbury’s The True Red lipstick which is an amazing red colour , and stays on. It’s matte but not too matte.” – BB Editor Renae Leith-Manos

RRP: $49

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick

“This liquid lipstick is easy to wear and doesn’t crack and dry like many other liquid lipstick brands. It is a matte finish and will stain the lips, and I recommend you wear a good coating of your favourite clear lip balm underneath to ensure lips stay hydrated and assist with the removal of this liquid lipstick at the end of the night.

The texture of this liquid lipstick is smooth and easy to apply. You won’t need to re-apply for at least six hours (yes even after eating and drinking) which is outstanding, and I love how quickly the lipstick dried after applying one coat.” – BB Writer Rebecca Wilkinson

RRP: $20
