How to Save Your Hair This Summer

how to protect your hair in summer

Summer is the best time to exercise outdoors, but it can play havoc with your hair.

The sun’s rays, water and high temperatures can leave your hair dull and lifeless. These new breed of hair products could be for you.

Products can help both before and after your fitness to protect and inject the life back into your hair. Whether you are swimming, running or playing a team sport, here are Bondi Beauty’s favourites.

Before your favourite activity, protect your hair with one of these gems:

Oil: Oil is a quick and easy way to revitalise and add shine to your hair. Sydney hairdresser Barney Martin recommends applying oil to clean and damp hair, as it will replenish moisture over a period of time. “Oils contain acids that are able to penetrate deeper into the cortex of each strand, working to nourish from the inside out,” explains Barney Martin from Barney Martin Hairdressing.

Leave it in whilst working out and wash it out at the endSHU UEMURA Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Protective Oil, $66.00;

BB Tip: Rub a little oil into your cuticles whilst putting it in your hair to keep nails moist and strong too.

Leave-in Serum: Leave-in in serum has a different texture to oils, but plays a similar role and ensures your hair looks good. “Serums are silicon based and work to create a glossy effect by coating the hair in the same way as a mask or plastic wrap – they will give you an instant cosmetic result,” Says Barney Martin. BB Tip: Leave-in serum is also great to pop onto clean hair after your shower, as it keeps hair looking shiny but not greasy, just don’t use too much.

SPF Sun Screen: Just as you would apply sunscreen to your body when you’re out in the sun, you should also use an everyday protectant for your hair, especially if it is coloured. “SPF Masks should be applied before heading out into the sun.

The oils absorb into the cuticle of the hair, leaving it feeling nourished and protecting the hair and hair colour from harmful rays”, says Australia hairdresser of the hair Brad Ngata, “They’re an effective way to treat hair quickly – perfect for busy, active people”. Wella SP Sun Concentrate Sun Screen, $32.00

BB Tip: Use this when working outside, not just when exercising, as it takes such great care of your hair.

Some revitalizing products to use after your exercise:

Shampoo and Conditioner: When you exercise, you’re obviously going to produce sweat, and sweat contains salt, which builds up and dehydrates your hair.  An effective shampoo and conditioner will cleanse, protect and revitalise your hair. “People tend to wash their hair daily – to keep the hair clean, (especially when they’re into fitness).

This can dry out the hair, so I would recommend the use of a quality shampoo and conditioner to keep strands strong and hydrated”, adds Brad.Kiehl’s Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Shampoo &  Conditioner, $30 each.

BB Tip: Pour some of your favourite shampoos and conditioners into small travel style containers and take them to the gym. The last thing you want to use are the cheap soap/shampoos in the showers – they will add to the dehydration of your hair.

Mask: Treatments like masks work to restore your hair from sun damage and daily activities. They seal moisture and oils into your roots and ends, which effectively revive the hair shafts. “Masks are a good choice to revitalise hair from the summer sun,” recommends Barney.

“They protect against heat damage, while styling and working to create sleek, luminous locks”. Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask, $44.50

BB Tip: Placing a piece of plastic over your hair mask makes it work twice as well, and allows you to step out of the shower whilst waiting for it to work its magic.

Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoo is an essential gym-bag product. After a workout, when there’s no time for a shower, dry shampoo will transform oily strands to matte, volumised locks.  “Wear your hair up while exercising,  as it will get sweaty either way,” says Brad.

“Dry shampoo leaves your hair looking and smelling clean, but be sure not to overdo it. More than two applications of dry shampoo can cause a build up. “A few sprays after a workout or a long day is quick, easy and you’re good to go”.  De Lorenzo Absorb Dry Shampoo, $19.50; 1800 800 347

BB Tip: Spray dry shampoo on ASAP after a workout and leave the white stripes in for at least 5 full minutes whilst you dress or do other make-up, then brush out so it absorbs maximum oil.
