The latest research shows exercise and nutrition have the biggest impact on reducing cellulite.

Research suggests cellulite is as much an issue of health, as appearance. Sydney PT Rachel Livingstone says the best way to fight cellulite – and find better health, is from the inside out, with exercise and nutritious, fresh food.

Cellulite affects 80-95% of women and has many influences from genes and hormone dysfunctions, to lifestyle habits and psychological factors.

Whilst some women have been found to have a greater amount of fat-storing receptors and lesser amount of fat-releasing receptors, especially in cellulite prone areas, diet and exercise exert a massive influence.

Cardio boost
The pumping action of the heart and lungs during aerobic exercise boosts circulation ensuring sufficient blood supply to all the tissues of your body. One of the main problems with cellulite is it has a very poor blood supply. Get walking, running, dancing, boxing or cycling to improve the delivery of nutrients to your cellulite prone areas. The more nourished this tissue is, the less it hangs around.

Strength secrets
Working muscles massage your blood and lymph vessels improving their ability to clear waste products. Whilst you focus on shaping and toning your muscles you are also increasing your metabolism and burning fat. Cellulite is fat – less fat, less cellulite. Pick up a kettlebell or dumbbell and start pumping iron to say goodbye to dimply fat.

Get up – often
It is the lack of nourishment to your supporting fibres that makes them become thick and elastic giving you the ‘orange peel’ affect. The more often you boost your circulation and metabolism the better for the health of your connective tissue. Look for any opportunity in your day to be active rather than sedentary.

Chemical build up
Free radicals damage the walls of blood and lymph vessels diminishing circulation. Wherever possible limit your exposure to free radicals in the form of pollution, sunlight, drinking, smoking and processed foods. You can help your body balance the existence of free radicals by eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables that are high in anti-oxidants. Drinking plenty of water also helps flush toxic build up lessening cellulite.

Fats matters
Whilst you do not need to be overweight to have cellulite, most people will benefit from reducing total fat intake. Also ensure your ingested fats are predominantly essential fatty acids, such as sunflower oil, sesame seeds, walnuts and fish. These contribute to good skin health and are more easily released from storage, so do not sit on your thighs and butt.
